Top Fishing Charters in Hervey Bay

Fishing in Hervey Bay

Hervey Bay is a paradise for anglers in Australia. Sheltered by the 123 km long Fraser Island, this waterway is home to both tropical and temperate fish species, with both big game and surf fishing opportunities just waiting for you to wet a line. The only problem anglers traveling to Hervey Bay will face is what to do first.

Known For

Hervey Bay is the name of both the township and the Bay itself. Thanks to the town’s ample accommodation and dining options, its world famous whale watching trips, and its bountiful tackle shops, it is the perfect base for a vacation by the water. And with Hervey Bay fishing being so diverse, you will want a couple of days in the area in order to get the most out of it.

Land-based anglers will be able to sample a teaser of what is available by fishing the iconic Urangan Pier. While this won’t get the diversity of species available further offshore, Urangan pier fishing can lead to some good catches of Whiting (especially in the spring), as well as Queenfish, Trevally and Mackerel in deeper waters at the end of the pier. Shelly Beach, the Urangan Steps, and the walls of the Great Sandy Strait Marina also have potential for people who don’t have access to a boat.

But if you really want to experience the best Hervey Bay fishing spots, you will want to charter a boat. This will give you access to the Bay’s islands, mangrove creeks, tidal flats, and reefs, as well as taking you offshore for some of the most exciting fishing there is.

The hottest spots include Big Woody Island, whose north-eastern side is home to a reef known as “The Graves”. Don’t let the name put you off! This area houses delicious bottom fish like Mulloway, Morwong, Sweetlip, Parrotfish, and Snapper. Head beyond that and you’ll find the island’s smaller cousin - Little Woody Island. The north of the island houses broad sandy flats that are ideal for wading and sight fishing the Bay’s crystal clear waters for Golden Trevally and more (watch out for Sharks!). Sight fishing for Longtail Tuna in the clear, shallow waters is also an event not to be missed in the summer.

But what about the famous Hervey Bay big game fishing? To experience this at its best, you will need at least a day on the water - but believe us, it will be well worth it. Hotspots include the “Southern Gutters”, half way between Bundaberg and the top of Fraser Island. Here, a number of deep holes attract a whole array of bottom feeders and pelagic fish, including but not limited to Coral Trout, Cod, Trevally, Tuskfish, Mackerel, Kingfish, Marlin and Tuna. You can also try the wreck of the Chin-Chow, a boat that sank near Fraser Island about a century ago and is now a hotspot for Giant Trevally, Amberjack and Cobia, to name but a few.

And that's just scratching the surface! With everything from fly fishing on the flats to bottom bouncing over the reefs and wrecks to big game fishing for Marlin and Tuna up for grabs, don't miss out!
