Fishing in Freeport

There are a couple of Freeports in the US, but did you know that the second biggest city of the Bahamas is also called Freeport? Located less than 70 miles from Miami, this is an angling spot that has it all. With its diversity and abundance, fishing in Freeport, Bahamas will blow your mind.

Inshore anglers are particularly fond of Freeport’s fantastic Bonefish population. Fly fishing for these speedsters, also known as “Silver Ghosts,” is superb on the island – so much so, that it’s more popular than even offshore action! Excellent year-round Bonefishing and Permit chasing on the shallow sandy flats have earned the country the reputation of a premier inshore fishing destination.

But that’s not all! The Bahamas are famous for their outstanding offshore bite, and Freeport is no different. Though you won’t find as many Billfish in these parts, the bluewater is the playground of the prized pelagic species. Barracuda, Snapper, Grouper, and Sharks also abound here, but it’s the winter Wahoo fishing that’s the real showstopper. Fancy hooking into a 150 lb monster Wahoo? This is your chance!

If you’re coming to Freeport for a vacation and are flexible about your angling options, you’ll easily find a fishing charter. Spend several hours Bonefishing on the flats or dedicate a whole day to landing your biggest pelagic yet – the choice is yours. Local guides are experts in putting you on the fish, and they’ll know exactly where to take you for a productive day on the water.

Rules & Regulations

One of the many perks when fishing with a charter is that you don’t have to worry about fishing licenses – they’re usually included in the price. If you’re fishing on your own, make sure to buy the appropriate license before you head out.

Freeport Fishing Seasons

January

The coldest month of the year will still see temperatures in the low 70s. January is one of the best times to go after monster Wahoo which arrive in huge numbers this time of year on their winter vacation.

February

February is peak Wahoo season, with the North Bimini and West End Wahoo Tournaments. There are few tourists in Freeport this month, so you won't have to break the bank to organize your trip, and the time on the water will be unforgettable.

March

Wahoo and Mahi Mahi are biting like crazy, and towards the end of the month, Sailfish join the fray. Inshore, Permit are arriving to join the resident Bonefish, and mild weather makes for great fly fishing.

April

Blue Marlin, White Marlin, Sailfish, Tuna, Mahi Mahi, and the last of the Wahoo make April the perfect time for landing multiple monster pelagics on one trip. Inshore, Permit are biting in full force.

May

May is the best month for those looking to bag Bluefin Tuna! The Abaco Beach Blue Marlin Tournament also happens this month, if you’d like a taste of superb competitive Billfishing. Big numbers of Tarpon are also arriving inshore.

June

The rainy season has started, with temperatures in the low 80s. Luckily, there are so many fish to target both inshore and offshore that a bit of rain won’t bother you. June is your last chance to catch Sailfish before they leave.

July

Billfish season is drawing to a close with the last of the Marlin. Permit and Tarpon are still here en masse, as well as Snapper, Grouper, and a slew of pelagics. The West End Snapper festival is also worth checking out.

August

The highest temperatures of the year and quite a bit of rainfall keep most tourists at bay but, if you're not afraid of getting wet, there’sa lot of Tarpon and Permit, as well as Snapper, Grouper, and Amberjack to look forward to.

September

There's plenty of action out on the reefs, with Barracuda, Amberjack, Snapper, and Grouper all biting well. However, the extreme rain makes September less than ideal for flats fishing.

October

There are many awesome events to attend in October, from regattas to boat races, to the East End's conch cracking festival. This is also your last real chance to bag a Grouper offshore and have delicious fish fillets for dinner.

November

Wahoo are back, and the rainy season draws to a close. This is a great time of year for those looking to escape the cold and get some awesome fishing in. There’s plenty of action on the reefs, and Barracuda and Snapper are the main catches.

December

The top-notch Wahoo bite makes fishing in Freeport, Bahamas a great choice for the holiday season, and the Junkanoo festival is a sight you don't want to miss, with traditional parades and dances full of bright colors.
