Fishing in Jacó

Fishing in Jacó, Costa Rica is so good that locals claim that more record-breaking fish have been caught here than anywhere else in Central America. Access to the Gulf of Nicoya, numerous bays, and the deep waters of the Pacific would suggest they may be right! Hop aboard a charter here, and you’ll have the chance to target some of the world’s most sought-after fish.

So who are these fish? Well, a year-round Billfish population tops the target list, with Sailfish and three kinds of Marlin all popping up. The big game action doesn’t end there, though, with Mahi Mahi, Yellowfin Tuna, and Wahoo also on the cards.

Inshore, the exotic Roosterfish is a favorite of local and visiting anglers, while Snook also promises to keep you on your toes. Hit the reefs, and it’s all about meat for the BBQ. Go after Snappers, Mackerel, and Rainbow Runner and enjoy the fruits of your labor after a productive day out.

Thanks to the growing tourism industry in Costa Rica, fishing charters in Jacó have something for everyone. From four hour inshore trips to test the ropes to multi-day adventures offshore, everything is possible! Head to the town’s marina, up to the popular resort of Los Sueños or Playa Herradura, or down to Playa Hermosa and you’ll find a captain to take you to sea!

Rules & Regulations

Every angler aboard a fishing charter in Jaco will need a fishing license. You can get them at the dock or online from INCOPESCA, and some captains may even get yours for you. Your captain will also make sure you stick to all legal size and bag limits, along with a whole load of other regulations.

Jacó Fishing Seasons

January

Jacó begins the new year in style. This is peak Billfish season, but that's not all you can catch from Los Sueños. Expect Marlin, Sailfish, Wahoo, Mahi Mahi, and Tuna. Don’t miss the Triple Crown Tournament!

February

Costa Rica fishing centers around Los Sueños in February. This is the best month of the year to catch Sailfish, with up to 30 hookups in a day being a relatively common occurrence. Better get out on the water fast!

March

Sailfish, Mahi Mahi, Wahoo, and Yellowfin Tuna continue to make offshore fishing well worth your time. With hot dry weather and unforgettable fishing, Jacó and Los Sueños can make an ideal spot for Spring Break.

April

April is the last month of Costa Rica's dry season, and it's very hot. Make the most of the end of the peak season for the offshore pelagics and go out in search of Sailfish, Yellowfin Tuna, Wahoo, and Marlin.

May

With rains come floods, which sweep floating debris out into the sea. This is perfect for Mahi Mahi fishing! Roosterfish, Snook, and Cubera Snapper also love the rain, so inshore is plenty of fun too.

June

Wet and rainy weather continues, with the very best fishing being inshore for Roosterfish and more. Look for them feeding on bluerunners, who are loving the cooler waters caused by the rain.

July

Come fishing in Jacó in July, and this town's year-round fishery will not leave you disappointed, even though it's off-season. Look for Yellowfin Tuna and Mahi Mahi offshore, or fish the reefs for Jacks and Rainbow Runner.

August

August is a great time to bag a discount in Costa Rica. With most tourists staying away because of the rain, you'll have a discounted rate at your hotel. And with hot Roosterfish action awaiting you, what more could you want?

September

The rain gets more intense after a brief respite in July and August. But if you can brave the weather, you'll find that numbers of Sailfish and Marlin are heating offshore, with Roosterfish remaining good inshore.

October

Expect Sailfish, Blue and Striped Marlin, and large numbers of Mahi Mahi to start showing up in Jacó's offshore waterways. Snappers and Groupers are still making for great table fare. Look for them over the local reefs.

November

The rainy season is finally over, and Billfish fishing gets serious once again. Look for Blue and Black Marlin as well as Costa Rica’s specialty – the Sailfish in the deep waters of the Pacific.

December

Expect calm seas and amazing fishing. Come to Jacó in December, and you won’t be alone – this is peak tourist season. It isn’t hard to see why. The seas are calm and hook ups of Sailfish and even Marlin are common.

In January, fishing out of Jaco for sails and marlin is usually quite good...especially on the larger boats going out 30-40 miles. But if you are interested in only dinner fish like grouper and snapper, I would recommend just a half-day trip on a smaller boat fishing more inshore.

I speak enough Spanish to have understood on the radio that it was a slow day. Not for us! 2 sails and 11 tuna. Oh wait, did I mention that one of the sails was 120”? Carlos and Nicolas worked hard, were incredibly hospitable, and made the day perfect. 10 out of 10 would recommend! ¡Gracias amigos!

Caught a few sailfish on an offshore trip. Didn’t have luck with yellowfin or dorado but that will happen sometimes. Can’t control the fish. Had a fun time catching sailfish and seeing spinner dolphins.

Everything went as expected. The crew was there on time (at 7am) and was very helpful. They asked us what our preferences were in terms of types of fish we wanted to catch, and they delivered. We caught several very large sailfish. The boat was a good size and we felt comfortable and safe at all times. So overall, no regrets. We would recommend them strongly and we would use them again.

Nice well kept Maco with twin 115 outboards. Fish gear well maintained. Crew mature and not too chatty which worked well for us. Outriggers set with max number of trolling lines outfitted with bait and or artificials. Only one small Mahi Mahi caught. No fish brought on board but not for lack of effort/experience. Thanks Henry and Carlos!!!

Incredible full day trip with Capitan Mike and his crew. I went solo, but Nicholas and Tony still worked hard like they had a full boat of people. Always scanning and looking for signs of fish in the area. Being a fisherman in the states I had plenty of questions about fishing Costa Rica and Tony answered all of them for me. Had a great lunch with fresh fruit snacks and drinks “water, coke, beer” It was everything you could ask for in a trip. I’ll definitely be using them again when I come back.
