Fishing in Newquay

If you’re in the southwest of England, chances are you’ll be visiting Cornwall. This is the birthplace of the Cornish pasty, a meat and vegetable pie that’s as British as fish and chips! Along the north coast of Cornwall is Newquay, situated 12 miles from Truro, 50 miles from Plymouth, and 83 miles from Exeter. Known as the surfing capital of England, it’s a tourist hot spot; people flock down here for the multiple beaches, the top surfing, and the fishing opportunities. Fishing trips here are popular, fun, and productive for anglers of all skill levels. Whether you’re coming down for a day trip or staying the week, you’ll want to set aside some time to go fishing in Newquay.

What to Expect

Newquay has a colourful history, including smuggling and pirates! During both of the World Wars, dozens of boats were sunk off the coast, some as close as 10 miles from shore. Today, this provides multiple species with habitats, which is great for anglers. There are also many wreck divers here, so be aware of your surroundings when fishing.

The weather in Newquay is more similar to Europe than England, and as such the fishing in the Celtic Sea and the Atlantic Ocean is varied and unexpected. You can expect to target Wrasse, Pollock, Bream, Ling, Mackerel, Conger Eel, Tope Shark, Smooth-hound Shark, and more. You’ll find these species in various locations, so book a fishing trip that specialises in your intended target for the best chance of reeling it in.

Mackerel fishing trips are great for the whole family and beginners, as you’ll fish within 3 miles of shore. A full day Shark fishing trip will take you 20 miles from shore between June and September and is a lot of fun for the whole group.

You can also fish inshore on the River Fowley, which is great for experienced anglers to go fly fishing for Salmon, Seatrout, and Brown Trout. Some local lakes have also been stocked with four species of Carp and Catfish.

How to Prepare

You don’t need a fishing licence when sea fishing in the UK. If freshwater fishing, everyone over the age of 13 in your group will need to buy a fishing licence. You should bring your own drinks and food with you, along with sunscreen and a rain jacket – the temperature offshore is always cooler than the temperature on land.

With over 5,000 years of fishing history, Newquay is the place to fish when staying in England. Be a part of its history and have a top fishing trip down in the south!
