Fishing in Cabo San Lucas
Cabo San Lucas, Los Cabos, or simply “Cabo” to most visitors, is well-known across the continent. It’s a hub for spring break and summer vacations, but it’s also home to some of the best angling action in the Americas. Cabo San Lucas’ fishing charters are legendary, allowing the town to brand itself as the unofficial “Marlin Capital of the World.”
At the meeting point of the Pacific Ocean and the Sea of Cortez, Cabo attracts an array of prized fish. Year-round, you can find Marlin biting at the end of your line with Striped Marlin appearing in winter and Blue and Black varieties available in the warmer months.
However, it rarely gets cold here, so there’s never a bad time to visit. The Sea of Cortez attracts Mahi Mahi and Yellowfin Tuna just a few miles from shore, along with dazzling, exotic Roosterfish and exciting Yellowtails. Head further offshore, and the Billfish bite is sensational, with Sailfish and Swordfish joining Marlin for the chance to complete a “Grand Slam.”
One of the perks of casting from a Cabo San Lucas fishing charter is that you can land a monster fish on a trip as short as a few hours. The productive waters nearshore are ripe for fishing, and 4–6 hours can be enough to land dinner. However, the real prizes come offshore, where a full day or extended full day trip will take you 15–50 miles out to the banks.
Every angler fishing in Mexico needs a license, however, most captains in Cabo will arrange yours for you. Get in touch with your charter operator before you go to confirm, or pick yours up by the dock. You should also beware that you can’t cook your catch on board, so if you want a fishy dinner, you’d better bring your own snacks.
