Fishing in Cancún

Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula may be famous for its sun-drenched resorts and vacation-friendly coastline, but there’s another reason why you should make the journey here. Positioned right near the migratory route of some world-famous pelagic fish, it’s the country’s best-kept secret when it comes to casting a line! You’ll find a whole host of fishing charters in Cancun – the area’s hottest departure point for both inshore and offshore angling adventures.

Inshore, you’ll explore the fish-filled waters around Isla Mujeres and Isla Blanca, located about 25 miles from Cancun itself. These islands are home to famous game species such as Bonefish, Permit, Snook, and Tarpon. Closer to home, there’s the Nichupté Lagoon, which offers up some excellent flats fishing action for huge Permit. A local tip – fly fishing is especially popular on these shallow waters!

It’s fair to say, however, that the main draw for anglers visiting Cancun is the unbeatable offshore action. Thanks to its location, you’ll be able to start trolling or bottom fishing for your chosen target straight from the marina and will hit productive fishing spots around 15 miles out. Marlin, Sailfish, Wahoo, and Mahi Mahi all lurk beneath these waters. Make sure you bring along plenty of fighting spirit!

The best way to experience Cancun’s endless angling opportunities is alongside a local captain. There’s a whole host of charter vessels dotted around the city, offering adventures for all skill levels. Inshore trips generally start at the 4-hour mark, perfect for newbies and families, and can last up to 8 hours. Heading offshore and want to hook the Billfish of a lifetime? Opt for an 8-hour adventure – you’ll really increase your chances this way!

Rules & Regulations

You’ll need a valid Mexican fishing license, and most charters will make sure this is covered on your trip. Some fish species are subject to strict regulations, and traveling alongside a captain means you'll be fishing legally.

Cancún Fishing Seasons

January

January is Cancun's peak hotel season, and with very little rain and temperatures averaging 84 degrees, you can see why. Most charters concentrate on bottom fishing. Don't miss the annual Barracuda handline tournament on Isla Mujeres.

February

The pelagic bite starts to gradually pick up as warmer currents arrive, but the best fishing continues to be over bottom structure or for Snook on the flats. Windy weather can disrupt offshore charters.

March

The windy weather continues, but with it comes Billfish. Sailfish is biting well already and is joined by Blue and White Marlin this month. The beginning of the peak fishing season, this is a good time to try for a Billfish Grand Slam.

April

Everything is biting at this time of year, and with hotels being "off" season, this is one of the best times to go sport fishing. Fishing is as hot on the flats as it is offshore, as Bonefish, Permit, and Tarpon start to bite very well.

May

This is the beginning of the peak season for Bonefish and Permit in the flats, while offshore Dorado (Mahi Mahi) joins the Billfish. Watch the Whale Shark migration from the middle of the month through September.

June

With Tarpon coming into peak season, flats anglers start to set their sights on a Super Grand Slam. Offshore, the pelagics are out in force. This is prime Cancun fishing season, although the weather is hot and cloudy.

July

As the town gears up to celebrate the Mayan new year, anglers fish for Marlin, Dorado, Sailfish, Wahoo and more offshore. Inshore, Tarpon fishing is giving fishermen and women the fight of their lives.

August

The hottest month of the year, August temperatures average at 93 degrees during the day. There is usually a lot of rainfall. But the impressive pelagic bite is enough to lure anglers to Cancun's waters.

September

September is Cancun's wettest month and carries a hurricane risk. Flats fishing is at its best: high water temperatures create perfect conditions for Bonefish, Tarpon, Permit, and Snook. Hot deals can be had at the hotels.

October

October is still wet in Cancun. A transitional month for fishing, it notices a steep decrease in the number of pelagic fish being caught, with bottom fishing taking precedence offshore. This is the last good month for Tarpon fishing.

November

November kicks off with a bang with All Saints Day. With that comes the beginning of the peak tourist season - the weather is dry and the hotels are more expensive. Snook is biting well inshore.

December

As the holiday season approaches and the days remain dry and sunny, Cancun's beaches fill up. The first Sailfish start to show up in the middle of the month, bottom fishing is very good, and Snook are great fun in the flats and lagoons.
