Fishing in Gulf Shores

The southernmost settlement of Alabama, this popular resort town is aptly nicknamed "small town, big beach." Hop aboard any Gulf Shores fishing charter and discover great fishing, from the inshore shallows to the deep waters of the Gulf of Mexico!

Although the city harbors an increasingly rewarding inshore fishery, reef and deep sea fishing remain the name of the local angling game. Around 17,000 artificial reefs dominate the local seafloor, making it a hospitable place for beauties such as Triggerfish, Grouper, Amberjack, and over half a dozen Snapper species, including the sought-after Red Snapper, to call home.

Head even further out in summer, and you could come into contact with some true monsters of the sea. Marlin, Tuna, Wahoo, Mackerel, and Mahi Mahi can all be found in the deep waters of the Gulf, so settle in for a thrilling adventure.

You don’t need to head that far out, though, to get your hands on some exciting and delicious fish. Redfish, Black Drum, and Speckled Trout are available pretty much year-round inshore, while Pompano, Sheepshead, Whiting, and Flounder also add to the long list of fish that live in the Perdido Bay and its neighboring bayous and lagoons.

With so much fishing on offer, it’s no surprise that there’s a range of trips to cater to your needs. From a half day trip inshore to up to a few days on the water offshore, there’s something for all kinds of anglers.

Rules & Regulations

Another bit of good news when aboard a Gulf Shores fishing charter is that your license is covered. Your experienced, professional captain will make sure that you’re fishing legally and sticking to all the latest size and bag limits.

Gulf Shores Fishing Seasons

January

The weather may be cold, but don't be put off. Often, you'll find that the colder the weather, the hotter the fishing. We recommend sight fishing for Bull Redfish along the beaches on a clear day or targeting Grouper offshore.

February

Despite the cold weather continuing, Redfish and Sheepshead are still biting well in the bays. Shake the winter doldrums with the annual Black Drum run, which is an excellent opportunity to catch big fish on light tackle.

March

Celebrate Spring Break in style by catching Redfish and Trout in the bays and passes, and looking out for Amberjack and Grouper over the reefs and wrecks offshore. Cobia arrive at the end of the month, too!

April

As the waters heat up, the number of species available increases. Cobia fishing is on top form and will continue through May, and sight fishing for these big fish as they swim past the beaches is an unforgettable experience.

May

The action in the deep is getting hotter as Mahi Mahi, Wahoo, and Tuna are caught on long offshore charters. Bottom fishing is also on the rise, while Flounder and Spanish Mackerel are rewarding catches on light tackle.

June

June in the Gulf Shores is all about Red Snapper. With both state and federal waters usually opening this month, this is prime time to catch some great table fare, with Mahi Mahi on offer in the deep, too.

July

The town of Gulf Shores is at its hottest and the fishing is diverse. Try fighting a Shark in shallow water, or enjoy catching Pompano on light tackle, inshore. Meanwhile, Sailfish and Tuna can be caught offshore.

August

With temperatures soaring, the best time to fish is in the early morning. Your best bet is to stay nearshore to troll for King and Spanish Mackerel or hunt for migrating Tarpon inshore, as Alabama bottom fishing bite is on fire.

September

Morning fishing continues to be the best option, as humidity is high. Enjoy the Kingfish migration, travel offshore for White Marlin, or have fun inshore with a strong Speckled Trout and Redfish bite – it's all going on!

October

The weather becomes cooler, with cold fronts changing up the fishing. On days that aren't affected by the infamous "Blue Norther," you can have a productive day bottom fishing or targeting Speckled Trout and Bull Reds.

November

Bull Redfish are gathering off the beaches and make for an amazing spectacle as they head to their breeding grounds. Weather conditions can put a halt to offshore fishing charters, so make sure to be flexible.

December

Bull Redfish are still appearing out of Gulf Shores. Sight fish on a clear day for some of the most exciting fishing in the Gulf of Mexico, with mild weather conditions giving you the chance to head out on the water.
