Fishing in Sausalito

If you’d like to cast your line away from the crowds, Sausalito is the perfect fishing destination. Nestled on the Richardson Bay, and just a stone’s throw from San Francisco Bay, this town is an anglers’ haven. Whether you prefer fishing from shore or reeling in your catch from a boat, there are plenty of Sausalito fishing charters to take you to your trophy catch.

This area is the playground of an array of popular species, including Chinook Salmon, Halibut, Lingcod, and even Albacore Tuna if you head to the offshore waters. You could also encounter Leopard Sharks and Rays, but know that when you get one of those on your line, you need to bring your A-game!

Anglers looking to mix things up can also go after Striped Bass and the prehistoric monster that is White Sturgeon. The waters of this area are brimming with trophy catches, and each of them will test your fishing skills and resolve in a different, exciting way.

Whether you’re in the mood to go on a Chinook hunt or you’d rather spend some time bottom fishing for “chicken” Halibut, there’ll be a guide to take you out. Take your pick between half day and full day trips, depending on how much time you have and how many fish you’d like to catch. Leave everything else in the hands of your trusty captain.

Fort Baker is one of the most productive fishing spots in Sausalito. When you book a trip with a Sausalito fishing charter, you’ll probably meet them here. Then, your fishing escapades can begin!

Sausalito Fishing Seasons

January
Winter fishing in California is excellent, especially if you love bottom fishing. The Flounder bite is hot, and you can also find some top-notch Halibut out there. White Sturgeon are also very active.
February
The fishing action in February is very similar to January, which means good angling opportunities and more fish out there than you could ever catch. Trophy-sized Halibut and Flounder roam the bay’s bottom for food and they make for excellent table fare as well.
March
March brings more Striped Bass opportunities, which is why you’ll see a lot of passionate Bass anglers out there. Hit the water to catch some delicious Flounder or spend your day battling Sharks.
April
The season for Rockfish and Lingcod is officially open, and bottom fishing lovers couldn’t be more thrilled! Add to that superb Halibut action and Shark fishing that doesn’t stop and you’ve got an exciting day on the water all planned out.
May
It’s Chinook time! The King Salmon season is open, so how about you hop aboard for some world-class fishing? Bottom fishing is still excellent, and Striped Bass are biting left and right.
June
The first month of summer also happens to be one of the best fishing months in Sausalito. Rockfish, Lingcod, and Halibut are thriving, and you can find more and more Albacore Tuna in the offshore waters.
July
Chinook expedition? Tuna hunt? Bottom fishing extravaganza? Whatever you’re in the mood for in July, you got it. Chinook fishing is at its peak, and the same goes for Albacore Tuna, the strong speedsters of the deep.
August
Tuna love warm waters, so this is the month they’ll be passing through the area in impressive numbers. Trophy Salmon hunters will have a blast as well, especially if they book a Salmon-bottom fishing combo trip.
September
Vacation days are over, so there may be fewer anglers on the water, but the fish are still here and they’re still hungry. You’ll get your adrenaline rush from going after Tuna, and delicious dinner from fresh Chinook fillets.
October
It’s getting slightly colder on the water and the weather might be a bit unpredictable. That doesn’t stop avid anglers from pursuing everything from Salmon and Rockfish to Albacore Tuna.
November
The Chinook season is closed, but there are plenty more fish in the sea. Lingcod are very hungry, as are Rockfish and Halibut, so fall bottom fishing is fantastic.
December
It’s the holiday season for the whole country – and for passionate bottom fishing anglers. Guides and their clients are making the most of every good-fishing day by targeting Rockfish, Flounder, Lingcod, and Halibut.
