Fishing in Anna Maria

Perched at the top of the island of the same name, the town of Anna Maria may be small but sure has some impressive fishing. With the Tarpon migration right at its doorstep, vast flats, and favorable climate year-round, Anna Maria fishing charters offer many opportunities for anglers vacationing here. But don’t let the soothing ambiance trick you for one second – these fish are feisty and won’t give in easily!

With the likes of Redfish, Black Drum, Snook, and Sheepshead biting almost throughout the year, local inshore waters will greet you with a challenge even outside of Tarpon season. Moving into the Gulf, these species are replaced first by Kingfish, Cobia, Grouper, and Snapper, and if you venture further, Mahi, Wahoo, and Tuna will be waiting to cut your line to smithereens.

If you’re staying inshore and planning a trip with your family, getting Redfish and Speckled Trout is a great way to spend half a day. Stay out a bit longer and experience trolling for Kingfish and Spanish Mackerel or bottom fishing for tasty Grouper and Snapper. If you’re looking for a tougher opponent, set aside a full day and head far offshore to battle the biggest beasts swimming in these waters!

If you’re a first-time visitor to Anna Maria and aren’t sure where to begin your charter search, Bimini Bay is all you should focus on. To be even more specific, you should try the marinas closest to the bay’s entrance. From here, you won’t need to waste any time getting to your fishing spot, giving you more time to reel in that dream catch!

Rules & Regulations

Saltwater anglers fishing from a licensed charter or with a licensed guide don’t need to purchase a saltwater fishing license. In case you want to go fishing around the Manatee River, you will need to purchase a freshwater fishing license online.

Anna Maria Fishing Seasons

January

The cold front doesn’t harm the local fisheries so much. On an average day, you can expect to catch big Trout, Snook, and some Tripletail. Check out the rivers for a mixed bag of freshwater species.

February

Redfish are starting to show up around the inshore waterways, while you can still sample Snook, Trout, Black Drum, and Tripletail. Make a journey just a bit further out, and you can get King Mackerel.

March

As the spring slowly sets in, you will see a rise in the number of species you can target. Redfish, Black Drum, Snook, King Mackerel, and Spanish Mackerel, as well as Cobia are biting. Offshore you can get Amberjack.

April

You will already see a good bite from Tarpon around the flats. It’s really something watching as Tarpon swim by the boat. Anna Maria is the place to be. Plus, you can also get Trout, Snook, and Flounder.

May

The Tarpon bite is in full swing as the ‘Silver Kings’ forage around the bays and flats. If you head far offshore, you can get some Wahoo and Mahi.

June

Fishing just got so much better as the annual Snapper season opens. Around the offshore reefs you can also get Grouper. Kingfish are also biting like mad, as well as a good number of Mahi.

July

The heat of the summer is on which means that fishing is hot. Offshore you can get Snapper and Grouper. Pelagics offer supreme action too, with Kingfish, Mahi, and Wahoo all over the place.

August

If you’re looking for a fight, Amberjacks near offshore wrecks put up a terrific display of brute force. You can also get juicy Snapper and Grouper, plus go trolling for Kingfish.

September

Around the rivers, you can get Bass, Crappie, and Bream. Inshore saltwater has good Redfish and Black Drum, while further out you can get King and Spanish Mackerel.

October

October colors mean one thing - Wahoo are back. Head far offshore to go trolling for them, or stay inshore for some excellent fishing that can get you Red and Black Drum.

November

Inshore fisheries are on fire with Bull Redfish, Black Drum, and Trout putting up an incredible fight around flats and bridges. You can also get good Bass around the Manatee River.

December

The weather is getting colder, but the fishing stays quite warm. You can get Redfish, Black Drum, and ‘Gator Trout’ around inshore waterways. You could be fishing within 15 minutes of departure, so inshore is a safe option for a catch.
