Fishing in Dunedin

Dunedin is a slightly off-the-beaten-track vacation spot that boasts gorgeous white-sand beaches and pristine waters. And if you’re visiting, fishing in Dunedin, FL should be at the top of your holiday bucket list. Abundant flats, Saint Joseph Sound, Old Tampa Bay, and the Gulf of Mexico are all within your reach with more fish species than you could ever wish for.

If you like inshore fishing, you will have a blast battling Redfish, Spotted Seatrout, Tarpon, Snook, Black Drum, Flounder, and Mackerel around the Sound. Look east and explore the Old Tampa Bay for a variety of nearshore and inshore fish including the Silver King himself, Black Drum, Pompano, Permit, and all other local favorites.

Once you venture out into the Gulf, you’ll be spoiled for choice. You can go trolling for King and Spanish Mackerel en route to offshore reefs where Amberjack, a wide array of Grouper, and Snapper hide. If you’re coming to Dunedin to land your next trophy, then head out 60 or more miles and come face to gills with Wahoo, Mahi Mahi, Tuna, Sailfish, and even Blue Marlin.

The only question now is what you'd like to catch? Dunedin fishing charters can organize any trip under the sun, just say the word. Target giant Grouper more than 80 miles offshore, catch plenty of Snapper for delicious dinner, or hang out in the flats and land an Inshore Slam with your family – the choice is yours.

Anglers from all over the country go fishing in Dunedin, FL to enjoy the fantastic action on the water and even better catches. Now it’s your turn!

Rules & Regulations

Go fishing with a licensed charter and you won’t need a saltwater fishing license to have a go at the Dunedin fishing grounds. Solo anglers, however, should be in the loop about the current regulations and license requirements.

Dunedin Fishing Seasons

January
In the middle of the winter, Gator Trout won’t disappoint. Check out the Old Tampa Bay and you can also sample some Redfish. Offshore you can get Grouper on a catch and release trip. Make the most of the less crowded waters!
February
If you’re planning to scout around inshore fisheries, you can snatch some Black Drum, Sheepshead, the odd Redfish, and big Trout. Offshore, it is all about bottom fishing for Grouper.
March
The temperatures are gradually picking up and the fishing opportunities follow. Snook are coming out of their winter shelters, making their way towards more open waters. You can also see the first signs of Tarpon.
April
Spring is here which means that trolling for King and Spanish Mackerel can be super productive. You can also target Snook, with Redfish starting to bite more and more.
May
You better be quick if you want to land a Tarpon. The hype is real and a lot of local charters get booked before you know it. You can also do some trolling for Mackerel a bit further out. Grouper fishing is still going strong offshore.
June
With Tarpon action on fire, it’s easy to understand why so many boats booked out early. Head offshore to get Red Snapper because the season’s finally open! You can also try some catch and release for incredible Snook.
July
Summer’s here and the beaches are filled with vacationers. If you want more of an adrenaline rush, Snapper and Grouper season offshore is on fire, with anglers regularly coming back with a nice dinner.
August
Head out early in the morning to get bait fish and then move onto Tarpon and Snook. Anglers will find plenty of action far offshore, with Mahi Mahi and Tuna biting more than 50 miles out.
September
You will see more and more Redfish showing up around flats, which can turn your September day on the water into a real sight casting treat. A bit further out, King and Spanish Mackerel are present, not to mention voracious.
October
King Mackerel are in the spotlight, with trolling producing excellent results. Inshore, Redfish dominate the channels, sounds, and flats, putting up a real fight.
November
It’s that time of the year when Redfish seem to be all over the place, so chances are you will have a great day on the water. You can test your skills against Amberjack, the reef donkey, offshore.
December
As inshore waters cool down, more anglers come to town. Gator Trout are showing up and you don’t want to miss them. Black Drum and Redfish are also hanging around, with great Grouper action offshore.
