Fishing in Siesta Key

Even the name Siesta Key suggests that on this barrier island, good times are guaranteed! Whether it’s picture-perfect beaches, excellent snorkeling possibilities, or angling spots to die for, this key has it all. If you’re a newcomer fisherman, then you can take your pick among Siesta Key’s fishing charters and make the most of your time on the water.

With Sarasota and Roberts Bays on one side and the prolific Gulf of Mexico on the other, it’s no wonder that fishing is so popular. Cast your line from one of the beaches or try inshore fishing for a mixed bag that could include anything from Spotted Seatrout, Redfish, Tarpon, and Snook to Sheepshead, Flounder, Ladyfish, and Jack Crevalle.

If you’re in the mood for an offshore adventure, you’re in for the time of your life. The deep waters of the Gulf are a nursery for hundreds of species, a lot of them trophy-sized. Start off with Snapper, Grouper, Cobia, and Jacks in the reefs, and as you head out further, troll for Mahi Mahi, Wahoo, and Tuna. Billfish like Marlin, Sailfish, and Swordfish are also in the cards. You can also expect a variety of Sharks to make an appearance.

Fishing in Siesta Key is open year-round and you’ll easily find a guide to take you out. Avid inshore anglers will enjoy specialized full day Tarpon trips, especially in spring and summer, when the bite is at its best. Offshore aficionados can book all-day deep sea expeditions and hook a fish to remember. Vacationing families can enjoy a half day inshore excursions all year.

Rules & Regulations

All licensed Siesta Key fishing charters come with the necessary licenses for everyone on board. Beach anglers need to be aware of daily catch limits and require a saltwater fishing license.

Siesta Key Fishing Seasons

January
The coldest month of the year still sees average temperatures of around 60ºF. Trout, Snook, and Redfish are all very active this time of year, so jump aboard a flats boat for some great sight casting.
February
Shark fishing is at its best in the winter months, so get out on a nighttime charter to see these awesome predators at their peak. This is real monster hunting, and certainly not for the faint-hearted!
March
March sees the arrival of the spring Cobia migration, with huge numbers hitting the local waters, alongside plenty of resident Grouper and Snapper. Hit the reefs and bag some good-eating fish!
April
You can find more and more species making their way into the local waters in the height of spring. There are still plenty of Sharks to be found, and inshore, Redfish and Snook are biting like crazy.
May
The Sarasota Tarpon Tournament has been drawing in anglers looking to take on these explosive fish for the better part of a century. The competition is stiff and the fish are huge, so you better bring your A-game.
June
June signals the start of the best offshore fishing with Mahi Mahi, Wahoo, Sailfish, and even Marlin turning up on bluewater trips. Blackfin Tuna are also at their most active this time of year.
July
Red Snapper is in season and you're basically guaranteed to hit your limit, so get the grill ready and enjoy some of the most delicious fish the Gulf has to offer!
August
Yes, August is the hottest month. Yes, it’s the most humid. Head out in the morning to beat the heat, bring plenty of sunscreen and get ready to battle anything from Grouper to Swordfish, depending on your preference.
September
The worst of the sun starts to ease off in September and you can have some productive mornings targeting Permit, Snook, and Redfish inshore. There is also less rain, making for better sight fishing.
October
The offshore bite tails off, while Shark fishing starts getting more productive. No matter the time of year, however, you can always rely on some solid Snook, Redfish, and Trout catches inshore.
November
Get down to Siesta Beach for the annual Siesta Key Crystal Classic. Sand sculptors battle to outdo each other with awesome and outlandish constructions, making for great fun for the whole family.
December
Siesta Key really is the perfect place to spend the holiday season. Warm weather, lovely beaches, great fishing. If you somehow do get bored, just head up the coast to Florida's Capital of Culture.
