Fishing in Tarpon Springs

While most people will exclusively think of fishing for Silver King, Tarpon Springs has a lot more to offer to a prospective angler. This diverse fishery caters to all levels and Tarpon Springs fishing charters have access to a network of flats, Anclote Anchorage, Gulf fisheries, and Lake Tarpon. And they’re all at your disposal.

If you’re looking for the best Tarpon action, Saint Joseph Sound is one of the premium locations. Add to that Trout winter run, as well as year-round fishing for Snook, Redfish, Pompano, Flounder, and Mackerel, and you’ve got a winning combo. Freshwater anglers will enjoy Lake Tarpon (though the name is misleading), where they can cast their line for big Bass, Bluegill, Black Crappie, and Redear Sunfish.

Of course, you can’t miss out on exploring the Gulf while you’re in town. Nearshore, chase after King and Spanish Mackerel, Snapper, Grouper, and Cobia. Hardcore anglers travel past the 60-mile mark to find Mahi Mahi and Wahoo. Deep sea fishing is fantastic, but you’ll have to go 80 miles offshore to hook impressive Amberjack, Sailfish, and a wide range of Grouper and Snapper species.

All that being said, who can go fishing in Tarpon Springs? Well, just about anyone. Families with kids will have a blast on half day inshore excursions, and a lot of tasty fish for dinner. Nearshore trips are perfect for novices looking to experience diverse fishing not that far from land. Finally, deep sea fishing expeditions are usually booked by the seaworthy fishers, ready for a test of strength and skill.

Come to Tarpon Springs, find your captain, and your fishing adventure can begin!

Tarpon Springs Fishing Seasons

January
You might get cool weather, but the bite is super hot, with Grouper bunching up around the nearshore and offshore bottoms, making any day a great one for catch and release. You can also get Redfish, Snook, and Trout.
February
February brings a steady bite from inshore species, and you can get Snook, Redfish, and some Trout, or practice catch and release for Gag Grouper.
March
As the cold front rolls out of town and the temperatures go up, Snook rise in numbers, especially around creeks. You can also get some Sheepshead as well as Mackerel a bit further out.
April
If you don’t mind traveling more than 50 miles from land, then the trip can yield some big and hard-fighting Wahoo. Meanwhile, you can target a slew of species inshore, with Redfish, Trout, Black Drum, and Snook topping the list.
May
It’s all about Tarpon this time of year. Choose fly fishing or sight casting and come out to the Saint Joseph Sound for a fishing spectacle! You can also get Trout and Snook inshore, as well as Black and Red Drum.
June
Get out early to avoid fickle weather, get some fresh bait, and make your aim for Snook and Redfish. Tarpon are biting left and right, so your inshore trip will probably be a memorable one.
July
Bottom fisheries near offshore reefs and wrecks hold Snapper and Grouper. Anglers on vacation are all headed out to find delicious table fare. Stay inshore and you can get a beautiful King Mackerel or two on the line.
August
Mangrove Snapper, Grouper, Cobia, Flounder, or all of the above – the choice is yours in August. There are plenty of Trout in the water, so you could easily land a mixed bag of top-tier inshore species.
September

October
Redfish are getting better on the flats while you can find superb Snook fishing around creeks and rivers. The King Mackerel fall run is in full swing, and slow trolling can get you bags of catch.
November
Although the weather’s cooling off, the waters are lit up with Snook around the creeks and King Mackerel around deeper flats. You can get epic Redfish and Black Drum as they enter their fall frenzy.
December
The days are colder, but fishing surely isn’t. An average day on the water can get you Snook, Kingfish, some Redfish, Black Drum, and more.
