Fishing in Honolulu

If ever there was a city made for enjoyment, it has to be the capital of Hawaii. Whimsically known as “The Big Pineapple,” Honolulu boasts gorgeous beaches, awe-inspiring views, and of course, first-class fishing opportunities. If you’re visiting for the first time and you’d like to wet your line, dozens of Honolulu fishing charters are at your service.

Hawaii is famous for its epic deep sea fishing. As the home of the Blue Marlin world record, Honolulu is the mecca of trophy chasers, and in these prolific waters, you can target anything from Marlin, Tuna, and Mahi Mahi to Wahoo, Sharks, and Shortbill Spearfish.

Even if you’re not keen on battling monster pelagics, you’ll still be spoiled for choice on the local vibrant reefs. This is where you go for a fun day of bottom fishing for Snapper, Grouper, and Triggerfish. The local flats have a big Bonefish population, as well as Barracuda, Ladyfish, and Jacks. The Trevally bite is particularly good in the inshore waters.

With an abundance of fish comes a great choice of charters and an even better variety of trips. Bluewater is very close to land (1–2 miles) and even half day options can put you on premier big game action. Reef and bottom fishing trips are perfect for families, and you can even book a shared excursion, which tends to be more affordable.

The best spot to find a fishing charter to your liking is the Kewalo Basin Harbor. You can also find a number of boats in the Ala Wai Harbor, just a few minutes away from Waikiki Beach.

Rules & Regulations

No license is required for recreational fishing in Hawaii. However, size and bag limits do apply and some species are restricted at certain times of the year. Hitting the water with a Honolulu fishing captain is the best way to make sure you fish according to local regulations.

Honolulu Fishing Seasons

January

Start the year off with a catch to remember! Target Shortbill Spearfish on light tackle or Bigeye Tuna with lures. You can also hit the reefs and get your share of Snapper, or enjoy Bonefishing on the flats if the weather serves you.

February

This is a great time to go on a Striped Marlin hunt. Have a fantastic time and even better catches! Inshore fishing could bring you a slew of delicious reef species, or you can stalk the “Ghost of the Flats” aka Bonefish.

March

Fishing kicks into gear even more with the beginning of spring. This means you can go after just about every pelagic in the book – Mahi Mahi, Wahoo, Tuna, and of course, Marlin. When you’re done with fishing, enjoy the Honolulu Festival.

April

With every passing day in April, there are more and more offshore A-listers to target. Yellowfin Tuna, Wahoo, Mahi Mahi, and Marlin are all going strong. Ulua and Papio, aka juvenile and adult Trevally, start appearing closer to the coast.

May

The first of May is the Lei Day Celebration. When you’re not reeling in your catch, you can enjoy crafts, food, and live music in Kapiolani Park. Marlin, Wahoo, and Tuna will still be biting when you get back, so you can have the best of both worlds.

June

Fish offshore and catch Wahoo and Yellowfin Tuna during their peak season! If you’d like to try shore fishing, big Ulua are out there. At this time of year, there are plenty of tournaments to look out for, including the Kewalo Harbor Big Fish Chase.

July

In mid-summer, you’ll have a blast while fishing for Tuna, Marlin, Wahoo, and Mahi Mahi. At the end of the month, Albacore Tuna arrives. Giant Trevally in the inshore waters are attacking lures with abandon and are the perfect prey for a change of pace and scenery.

August

This is the hottest month in Honolulu, so if you want to hit the water and chase Blue Marlin, you better be prepared to fight off the heat. Yellowfin Tuna are swarming the bluewater in August, with Skipjack and Albacore following close behind.

September

Enjoy The Aloha Festival, a state-wide celebration of Hawaiian music, dance, and history. You can fish the shorelines for Papio and Ulua, head to the flats for Bonefish, or spend a day offshore with Wahoo, Tuna, Mahi Mahi, and Blue Marlin for company.

October

October marks the second Mahi Mahi peak season, so this is an excellent time to target this colorful and delicious fish. The Skipjack and Yellowfin Tuna bite should still be good, too. Alternatively, head inshore and bring home something tasty from the reefs.

November

Even in winter, the temperature in Oahu doesn’t dip below 70°F. If you haven’t made it offshore yet, this is the time! All the pelagic superstars are out there, including Tuna, Spearfish, Marlin, and Mahi Mahi.

December

Striped Marlin hit peak season, giving anglers a new awesome target while fishing offshore. On the reefs, things are still going strong with plenty of Snapper, Grouper, and Triggerfish only one cast away from you.
