Fishing in Lake Charles

It should come as no surprise that Lake Charles is often called “The Lake Area.” It’s surrounded by fresh and brackish waters that are, best of all, fantastic for fishing! Lake Charles fishing charters won’t just take you out on its namesake waters, you’ll also get to explore Prien Lake and the bountiful Calcasieu River.

You’ll catch similar fish in both Lake Charles and Prien Lake. These include the inshore favorites that Louisiana is so well-known for – Redfish, Trout, Flounder, and Black Drum. Head to the upper stream of the Calcasieu River and you can take advantage of the bustling Bream and Spotted Bass population. In the middle stretch of river, Catfish, Largemouth Bass, and Crappie reign supreme.

The waters surrounding Lake Charles are great for both beginners and experienced anglers. A half day trip is a great way for newbies to pick up new skills and go home with a few fish. A full day trip gives you ample time to hook the “Big Three” or try out more complex fishing techniques, like fly fishing.

As you may already know, Lake Charles is often referred to as the gambling capital of the region. To accommodate that, plenty of local captains offer pick-up from the local casinos. If you came here specifically to get your fish on, a great place to start your charter boat search is along the eastern shores of Lake Charles, or further north in the Calcasieu River.

Rules & Regulations

Before stepping aboard a Lake Charles fishing charter, make sure to pick up a Louisiana Fishing License for all anglers of over the age of 16. If you’ll be targeting saltwater species south of Louisiana’s “saltwater line,” you’ll also need to purchase a Louisiana Saltwater License.

Lake Charles Fishing Seasons

January
The weather is cold but fishing can be hot, hot, hot, especially when it comes to Redfish. Fishing for Speckled Trout can also be very productive this time of year.

February
Even though the weather can be very cold, the fishing action is not slowing down. Reds can be caught both in deeper waters and the shallows. Trout fishing can also be great.

March
Some anglers consider this the best month to catch trophy Trout on Calcasieu Lake – cast your line and see they're right! Fishing for Reds is also a good choice in March.

April
If you're focusing on Calcasieu Lake this time of the year, you can't go wrong if you go after Redfish. They're usually found in the lake's southern parts.

May
The first two weeks of May are reserved for The Louisiana Pirate Festival. You can also celebrate by limiting out on Speckled Trout. Redfish can be found closer to shore abundantly.

June
Depending on the fishery, June can be some of the most productive months in the area. Go after Trout or Redfish – catch as many as you can!

July
July is all about fishing the deeper hot spots of the ship channel using both live bait and soft plastics. Schools of Reds and Specks are just waiting for you to reel them in.

August
If you want to go wild and fill your coolers with both Trout and Redfish, August is your month. Birds gathering above the feeding fish will show you the way.

September
In case you'd like to venture out to the Gulf, now is the right time. Various species are schooling closer to the coast and fishing can be very productive.

October
Fall fishing is heating up more and more and the fall Flounder run begins. In case you'd like to go after Redfish and Trout, they can also be found in abundance.

November
November is when the magic happens at Lake Charles and Prien Lake. If you want to catch that trophy Trout, now is the perfect time. Redfishing near shore is also great.

December
In addition to November, this is when the Trout fishing magic happens at Prien and Charles Lake. They can be caught in deeper waters, while Reds are usually found in shallows.
