Fishing in Plymouth

“America’s Hometown” is steeped in the nation’s culture, but visitors flock here year-round for more than just a history lesson. Plymouth, MA, fishing charters provide the cherry on the cake of every visit to Massachusetts. From family fishing trips in the bay to Tuna-hunting expeditions offshore, there’s something for everyone in the “Pilgrim State.”

Located on the west side of Cape Cod Bay, it’s no surprise that this body of water is the focal point for most anglers in Plymouth. The list of fish available here is almost endless, with some East Coast favorites rubbing shoulders with delicious creatures. Go after “cow” Striped Bass, “gorilla” Bluefish, and “doormat” Flounder, along with Scup, Tautog, Seabass, and many more.

But Plymouth fishing charters offer more than just a trip to the bay. The town is a gateway to the Atlantic, so there are plenty of offshore options for you to seek out. Head out to the Tuna fishing grounds and get your hands on monster Bluefin Tuna, or test your strength against monster Mako, Blue, and Thresher Sharks. There’s plenty in the way of table fare, too. Target Cod, Mackerel, Haddock, and Pollock, and you sure won’t go hungry!

With so much fishing on offer, it’s no surprise that there are a range of trips to choose from. A half day trip may be enough to fish the bay, but you’ll also have the chance of spending up to 10 hours on the water. You’ll need a full day to get offshore, but trips as long as 12 hours are common, with some bigger boats even offering multi-day liveaboard trips.

Rules & Regulations

The beauty about fishing aboard a Plymouth, MA, fishing charter is that your license is covered. Going out with a professional captain will also make sure that you stay on the right side of the law, as the seasons and limits in northern Cape Cod can be quite strict!

Plymouth Fishing Seasons

January
Even with most of the boats out of the water, you can still find some fishing charters operating in January. Pollock and Cod are on the menu, so come and land some delicious fish!
February
February in Plymouth can be very cold, windy, and snowy. But that doesn't mean that the fishing isn't hot. Try your luck fishing for Cod and Pollock in the deep, or Winter Flounder nearer to shore.

March
Fill the freezers with delicious Groundfish and focus on landing Pollock, Cod, and Halibut. Winter Flounder fishing can be good as well, so, with some luck, March can be really productive.

April
The changing seasons bring with them a whole new lease of life. Tautog and Striped Bass start to appear in the shallows, with the end of the month bringing Bluefish, so you'll see the fishing start to heat up.

May
Get ready for peak season as the sun shines down and brings new life with it. This is the best month for groundfishing, while Striped Bass are starting to hit their stride. Come and feel the thrill of fishing!

June
Interested in reeling in some impressive Striped Bass or Bluefin Tuna? This is the beginning of their prime season. Bluefish action is also on the rise, so there's something of all kinds of angler as summer's here.
July
The weather is hot and so is the fishing. Go after Tuna offshore or Stripers nearshore. Meanwhile, there are some monstrous Sharks just waiting to bite. Combine your trip with a real holiday, and you're in for a treat.

August
August is the time of abundance in Plymouth. You can catch anything from Sharks and Tuna to Striped Bass and Bluefish, while the whole town comes alive to the sound of festivals, tournaments, and parties.
September
While the tourists may begin to dwindle, the fishing is still red hot. Bluefish. Tuna, Bass, Pollock, Tautog, and Winter Flounder fishing is excellent, so come and make the most of the last days of summer!

October
Bluefish fishing is still at its peak, and any keen angler will relish the chance to hit the shallows without the crowds. While Tuna and Striper fishing slows down, attention offshore focuses on Groundfish again.

November
Bluefish, Striped Bass, Flounder, and Tautog can still be found inshore, while the deeper waters are reserved for Halibut, Cod, and Pollock. While the weather is starting to change, there's plenty to keep you warm!
December
Most of the action starts to slow down, with captains taking their boats out of the water. But that doesn't mean you can't land the fish of your dreams! Go after Cod, Pollock, and Mackerel if you can get out.

Captain Tyler had us meet him down the Cape. It was well worth the extra drive time. By doing this, we had less boat travel time and were much closer to the fish. My family and I had a blast. We plan on booking Captain Tyler again next year

Always dress in layers. I wore light hiking pants, perfect to keep me warm enough with the wind and protected from the sun. Bring light snacks but not bananas, apparently itโ€™s a myth you wonโ€™t catch fish eating bananas. ?

What a trip!!! Capt. George absolutely made the day for us. He is extremely knowledgeable about the Plymouth Bay fisheries and beyond and he put us on the fish all am! He made sure we had lines in the water at all times and we were running and gunning to chase the action - George did not disappoint! Hands down best captain to date after having been on multiple trips all over!

What a day, Captain Georgi was amazing, a great teacher talker and listener. Iโ€™m convinced that he was more determined than me to ensure we caught fish. I couldnโ€™t recommend him highly enough. If you only go on one charter this year, make Captain Georgi the one!
