Fishing in Ocean City

You may think all of Maryland’s fishing rotates around the Chesapeake Bay, but Ocean City, MD fishing charters are here to show you there’s much more on offer. “OC” was given the title of “White Marlin Capital of the World” by President Roosevelt way back when. It’s a must-visit if you want to experience some of the best fishing the East Coast has to offer.

It’s not all about big game fishing here, though. The Isle of Wight and Assawoman Bays offer prime inshore action, with Flounder, Redfish, Sheepshead, and Spotted Seatrout. Near the inlet and out towards the reefs, it’s all about Maryland’s state fish – Striped Bass, or Rockfish, as it’s known locally. These beasts swim with Black Seabass, Bluefish, Tautog, and many more to ensure a fishing frenzy.

However, the further out you go, the more exciting it gets. Tiger, Hammerhead, Dusky, Bull, Blacktip, and even Mako Sharks are on the prowl for some prey in summer. This is also peak season for Mahi Mahi, Tuna, and Wahoo. Over 30 miles offshore, you can get your hands on these creatures and elusive White and Blue Marlin, so get ready for the trip of a lifetime.

Speaking of trips, inshore adventures are ideal for families and beginners, and can last anywhere from a couple of hours up to a full day. If you want to go after those trophy creatures offshore, you’ll need at least eight hours, with some captains offering overnight adventures.

Rules & Regulations

Most Ocean City, MD fishing charters will provide your fishing license for you, but it’s worth checking with your captain before you go in case you need one. Your professional guide will also make sure you’re fishing within all legal size and bag limits.

Ocean City Fishing Seasons

January

Most of the fishing fleet leaves town over the winter months, taking the best of the fishing with it. This can be a beautiful time to explore Ocean City without a million tourists getting in your way, though.

February

Walk Ocean City's historic boardwalk in peace, as you explore the long beaches and take in the wild seascapes. Too cold? Head to the Seaside Boat Show, where over 350 boats are gathered and showcased indoors.

March

The first Flounder hit the shallows around Ocean City in March, bringing the inshore fishing fleet back with them. Jump aboard and bring the family along for an awesome day in the shallows.

April

Ocean City's fishing scene really gets going in April, with Bluefish, Flounder, and Tautog providing great catches. The summer crowds are still a distant dream and the waters are full of fish, so get out there!

May

The White Marlin Festival and Crab Soup Cook-Off promise plenty of fun for the kids and some of the most delicious soup around. Sign up, taste, and vote for the winner of the inspiring title of "Best Crab Soup!"

June

Ocean City fishing has a lot to offer to passionate anglers in June, whether you're into inshore or offshore action. The stars of the show are the Bluefin and Yellowfin Tuna, and the season will last until October. Closer to land, you can target anything from Redfish to Black Drum.

July

The Ocean City Tuna Tournament takes place every July, with over 100 boats competing to land the biggest Tuna. Even if you're not the competitive type, loads of huge Tuna can never be a bad thing.

August

The Ocean City White Marlin Open is, quite simply, the biggest fishing tournament in the world. Over 300 boats gather to battle monster Billfish, with millions of dollars in prize money at stake, as the city comes alive.

September

Tournament season winds down in September. The fishing is still great both inshore and offshore, so stick around and make the most of the quieter waters, with plenty of great rewards.

October

October is peak season for big Seabass in the waters around Ocean City. These guys are great table fare and are pretty fun to catch, so jump aboard and go score some dinner!

November

The Ocean City Winterfest of Lights makes Thanksgiving even more special. The waters are full of tasty Bass, Flounder, Tautog, and more, so ditch the turkey and enjoy a freshly-caught feast!

December

December is Rockfish mania in Ocean City. Striped Bass (known locally as Rockfish) is Maryland's state fish, and December is the peak time to catch them. Get your fish on and see out the year in style.
