If you want to wet a line in Michigan all year round, hop aboard one of the many Manistee fishing charters on offer! This city is located on the western shoreline of mighty Lake Michigan, which has a seasonal fishery, but also provides access to the Manistee River and Manistee Lake, which can be fished year-round. With three fantastic spots to choose from, you’ll be able to fish the “Great Lakes State” your way.

Lake Michigan’s fishing season kicks off in spring, when Manistee’s fishing charters get ready to chase huge Brown Trout along the shoreline. Early summer sees feisty Steelhead enter the mix, and the first few Salmon start to show up. Come late summer and fall, the angling action is all about gigantic Chinook Salmon, Cohos, and Lake Trout. You’ll find captains running trips anywhere from a few hours on the water, perfect for beginners, to a full day of chasing trophies.

The Manistee River winds 230 miles through Michigan before emptying into Lake Michigan at Manistee. You couldn’t wish for a better Trout fishery! As well as huge Brown and Rainbow varieties, you’ll also be able to target Chinook and Coho Salmon, as well as Steelhead. The river also flows into Manistee Lake, which is your best bet for Walleye and various Panfish. Again, captains offer trips running from a half day to a full day or longer.

Rules & Regulations

Any angler over the age of 16 wishing to cast a line in Manistee will need a valid Michigan fishing license. Some species, such as Salmon and Trout varieties, require an additional Great Lakes stamp. Your local captain will be able to tell you more about this.

Manistee Fishing Seasons

January

The temperatures may be seriously low, but head to Manistee in January, and you could be casting a line for Steelhead. Book a local guide and get ready to explore the area’s river systems.

February

You can join a local, experienced angler and get your hands on Steelhead during February. Get your tackle ready, find a suitable guide, and plan your fishing trip!

March

Trollers and pier anglers have the chance to hook some numbers of Brown Trout this time of year. Manistee River has good Steelhead fishing, and Lake Michigan is usually starting to open up.

April

Head to Manistee's north pier for Perch in the early hours of the morning. Steelhead and Brown Trout can also be caught along the lake, especially when trolling the shoreline. The Manistee River is also plentiful!

May

Bait fish are hanging out in the harbor right now, and so are Salmon. Chinook can be found in 140 to 220 feet of water. Large numbers of Lake Trout are also around. The fishing is really heating up!

June

Fish from a boat, a pier, or from the shore in June, and you'll be rewarded. You'll find anything from gigantic Chinook Salmon, to Coho, to Lake Trout biting. Catch them all if you can!

July

Trolling with spoons and flies from a boat during this time of year is especially productive. Get your hands on Chinook Salmon, Coho Salmon, and Steelhead. Lake Trout can also be caught in 180 to 300 feet of water.

August

In August, fish with flies, meat rigs, and plugs for Chinook Salmon and Coho Salmon. Head to Lake Michigan's bustling fishery, or explore the bite in the Manistee River. Salmon will be moving upstream soon.

September

If you head north of the port, you can explore the waters up to 150-foot deep for Chinook Salmon and Coho Salmon. The Manistee River and Lake Michigan are also bustling with plenty of fishing action.

October

The rivers hold good numbers of Steelhead and the occasional Brown Trout in October, especially the Manistee River. Head to Lake Michigan before the season closes to target a variety of fish.

November

The Manistee River holds good numbers of acrobatic Steelhead in November, which you can target if the weather allows. Pier fishing is also strong until the waters start to ice over!

December

The Manistee River is the place to be right now if you feel like fishing for Trout. The locals use jigs tipped with worms. Want to try ice fishing around the harbors? Make sure you step out with a local guide!

Post spawn, cold and rainy, three boys (2 younger). Lenny has his work cut out for him. He prevailed tremendously. He worked hard to keep the four of us entertained as we spent long hours searching for fish that just weren’t there due to an early spawn. I highly recommend him for families. We will be going back this summer to try the big lake.

Captain Gabe and first mate Nick - awesome duo. Husband and I are both SUPER novice fishers and they made it easy and fun. Showed us the ropes and got us into it quick and watching them do their thing was really entertaining and fascinating. The guys really know what they are doing so it's no wonder we had no problem getting to the limit fast. We are already planning on doing a return trip with Captain Gabe next year. We had a great time on the charter with Mike and Lou. My son pulled in a nice big king with Lou's help right at sunrise. Enjoyed some of the salmon that night for dinner and it was delicious. We are looking forward to a trip back to Manistee earlier next year to get some more fish on and fill up the coolers.
