Fishing in Lake George

With the stunning Adirondack Mountains surrounding it, Lake George is one of the most scenic lakes in the state of New York. But besides sightseeing, it also offers plenty in terms of angling. To explore it, all you have to do is pair up with one of the numerous Lake George fishing guides, and you'll be all set for an adventure.

Lake George features year-round fishing opportunities. The open water season lasts from April to December. During this time, you'll have the opportunity to reel in jumbo Lake Trout. For some more variety, there are also tough-fighting landlocked Salmon, as well as Smallmouth and Largemouth Bass, and more.

The lake starts freezing over in December, setting the stage for an ice fishing bonanza. Lake Trout will continue to bite even when the ice gets thick enough to fish through it. They're often joined by delicious Yellow Perch, which are caught in good numbers during winter.

There's good fishing all over the lake, however, many will say the northern basin is where the best Salmon action is. For Bass, you'll usually stick to the southern part of the lake and its many bays. Lake Trout, meanwhile, are most abundant in deeper portions of the lake.

As for guides, they frequently launch from places such as Bolton, Hague, Queensbury, or Ticonderoga. Half day trips are usually enough to get your hands on some Lake Trout, but longer trips will bring you more variety.

Rules & Regulations

On Lake George, anglers aged 16 and older will have to buy a New York fishing license before setting out. Also, most of the fish you'll target are subject to different size and bag regulations, so make sure you get familiar with those prior to your trip.

Lake George Fishing Seasons

January

The ice fishing season on Lake George is in full swing. Lake Trout and Yellow Perch will be your main targets, but Salmon have been known to bite at times as well. Just remember to bundle up!

February

In February, the ice is at its thickest. Pair up with an ice fishing guide and they'll bring out the heated shanties, drills, and specialized rods. Before long, you'll have some Lake Trout on the end of your line.

March

While there may be ice in the beginning of the month, you can expect it to start melting as March rolls on. Following ice out, the fish will be hungry and the conditions favorable no matter what you want to target.

April

April marks the beginning of the open water season on Lake George. With the waters still cold, you can expect Lake Trout to put up a fantastic fight when hooked. Atlantic Salmon will also be biting.

May

The Lake Trout and Salmon fishing is as good as ever in May. Many fishing guides will take you after Trout first, as they're the more consistent catch. However, Salmon fishing has been improving in recent years, too.

June

With the waters warming up, you can expect the Lake Trout to move deeper, closer to the lake’s bottom where it's cold. But more importantly, midway through the month, the Bass season on Lake George opens.

July

The warmer the waters are, the less of a fight Lake Trout put up. They'll still bite, mind you, but the tussle isn't as intense as usual. Bass, however, will be as eager to scrap as ever.

August

Much like July, August is a warm month on Lake George. Trout will be lurking deep, with Bass also leaving the shallows during the light of the day. Still, the action is as present as ever and your guide will know where to find the fish.

September

As the seasons start turning and the temperatures begin to drop once again, Lake Trout come alive. They're joined by Salmon, who'll put up an acrobatic fight if you manage to hook into them.

October

The cold, oxygenated waters are what Lake Trout like best. You can expect them to put up a thrilling battle when hooked, and you can look forward to good numbers, too. Meanwhile, Bass will be lurking shallows.

November

This is the last month you'll get to keep any Bass you reel in on Lake George, as the season closes at the end of November. Use the opportunity to have one final go at these fish, or do some trolling for Trout.

December

At the beginning of the month, the waters may still be fishable from a boat. Towards the latter half, however, you can expect ice to start forming. If the weather serves you, you'll be able to get out there and ice fish before New Year's.
