Fishing in Oswego

If you’re looking to explore the smallest of the Great Lakes, an Oswego fishing trip is a great choice. Few freshwater fishing opportunities in the States can beat tackling mighty Lake Ontario, drifting its tributaries, and discovering the area’s many rivers and lakes. And if that’s not enough to get you packing your bags, your list of potential targets is bound to.

What you’ll catch will depend on when and where you’re fishing. Expect to hook Chinook and Coho Salmon, Steelhead and Brown Trout, Largemouth and Smallmouth Bass, and Northern Pike in Lake Ontario, the Oswego River, or the Salmon River at different times of the year. Head to Lake Oneida and you’ll experience premier Walleye fishing, as well as great ice fishing.

When it comes to choosing a trip, it depends on your desires and targets. If you’re fishing in the late summer and early fall, head out on a full day trip for your best shot at Salmon. If you’re looking to introduce the family to fishing, and are hoping to land a few Trout or Bass along the way, a half day trip is a good choice.

Oswego is a maze of waterways and there are charters dotted all around town. For easy access to both the Oswego River and Lake Ontario, head to Wrights Landing Marina. The stretch between Utica Street Bridge and the Varvick Dam also offers productive fishing. Just be aware water flow changes are common here and can create tricky conditions.

Bear in mind that fishing regulations in Lake Ontario may differ to those in areas surrounding rivers and lakes. If you’re new to the area, it’s best to head out with a local guide to ensure you’re fishing within the law.

Oswego Fishing Seasons

January

Head to the Oswego and Salmon Rivers to enjoy a quiet and relaxing day on the water. Steelhead can be hooked in good numbers in the upper end of the Salmon River.

February

Hop aboard a drift boat to find Brown Trout and Steelhead on the Oswego River. The Salmon River is also a productive zone to check out for these fish.

March

Spawned out Steelies are start leaving the Salmon River and head into Lake Ontario. You'll also find Brown Trout along the lake's shorelines.

April

What can keep your rods moving if not large Brown and Lake Trout? Head into Lake Ontario's inshore waters for Brownies and into deeper waters to big Lakers.

May

The Lake Ontario fishing season welcomes you with open arms. From fierce Salmon and Brown Trout to large (very large!) Lake Trout out in deeper waters, there something for everyone.

June

Brown Trout are hanging out nearshore. The warmer waters agree with them and they're eager to bite. You'll also find Chinook Salmon in the lakes offshore waters.

July

Oswego River fishing offers up Walleye and Smallmouth Bass in good numbers. Lake Ontario fishing is nothing short of excellent, producing a number or large Chinook Salmon.

August

This is one of the best months to fish Lake Ontario. Chinook Salmon are biting actively as they start to make their move towards shallower waters. If you're chasing Bass, this is a great time to go after Smallmouth.

September

Reel-screaming Kings test your stamina, and Coho aren't far behind! For best results, head to the lakes tributaries. And don’t forget about Steelhead! These fish come through later in the month.

October

Lake Ontario fishing is winding down, but the Oswego River, Salmon River, and Oneida Lake are on fire. Take advantage of the last of the Chinook and Coho Salmon. Bass and Trout are also on the cards!

November

Experienced anglers should head into the Salmon River to try their luck against Steehlead. Looking to hook Walleye? There's no better fishery than Oneida Lake.

December

The season has slowly down significantly, but you can still hook into Steelhead and Brown Trout in the tributaries. If the conditions are good, head to Lake Onieda to cast for Walleye.
