Fishing in Astoria

The sheer number of Astoria fishing charters on offer reflects the amount of fishing opportunities in this part of Oregon. Perfectly situated along the banks of the iconic Columbia River, with the Nehalem and Tillamook Bays located nearby, this port city boasts plenty of ways for anglers to get their fish on. It’s also home to some world-famous fish!

Astoria is perhaps most well-known for providing direct access to the Columbia River. This freshwater fishery is beloved for its high numbers of Salmon varieties. Fishing guides generally head to this area in spring, when the first Chinook arrive. They’re joined by Coho and Steelhead in summer, and the fishery remains strong until around October. From May through July, huge Sturgeon enter these waters, and can be caught and released.

The saltwater fishing scene in Astoria is often overshadowed, but it offers up plenty of exciting angling action. Hit the Nehalem and Tillamook Bays, or travel out onto the open waters of the Pacific, and you could encounter Salmon, Lingcod, Halibut, Crab, and Albacore Tuna. Most local guides explore these waters through spring, summer, and fall, but winter can yield surprising catches such as Lingcod and Crab.

Depending on where you want to fish, you’ll have a variety of trips to choose from. If you’re exploring the bays or the ocean, opting for a full day trolling or bottom fishing trip is the best option. For the Columbia River, many local guides offer half to full day adventures that can be tailored to suit your skill level and preferences.

Rules & Regulations

All anglers age 12 or above will need a valid Oregon fishing license to cast a line in Astoria. If you’re fishing the Columbia River, you’ll also need a Columbia River Basin Endorsement.

Astoria Fishing Seasons

January

January's a great time to get on the water if you're not afraid to face some chilly weather! Walleye and winter Steelhead are biting vigorously. Now’s your chance to experience this world-class fishery without the crowds.

February

Average temperatures hover between 38 and 51°F as Astoria’s winter fishing continues along the rivers. In the bays, bottom fishing promises Lingcod, Cabezon, and more.

March

You can expect lots of that famous Oregon rainfall through March, but don’t let that put a damper on your mood! The winter Steelhead run is wrapping up as spring Chinook begin to enter the Columbia River.

April

Average temperatures are creeping toward 60°F as the spring Chinook season gets underway. Trophy Sturgeon aren’t here just yet, but you can enjoy fishing for keeper-sized fish while you wait.

May

It’s that time of year when anglers go berserk for massive Sturgeon in the Columbia River! Come wrestle with a 100+ lb fish and bring home some bragging rights. In the bays, Halibut are open to harvest.

June

June is all about variety here in Astoria. The Columbia River is crowded with monster Sturgeon, Steelhead, and summer Chinook, while the bays are bustling with Halibut and other bottom fish.

July

With average temperatures as high as 68°F, you can enjoy some of Astoria’s warmest weather out on the water. Now is the perfect time to head offshore for the Albacore Tuna run.

August

Come August, fishing in Astoria is all about Buoy 10. Anglers from the far reaches of Oregon travel to the mouth of the Columbia River for a chance to indulge in this magnificent run of Salmon and Steelhead.

September

Excellent angling opportunities can still be found around Buoy 10. Get a taste of the action and then head offshore for Dungeness Crab, Tuna, and the last of the Halibut, if the annual quota still hasn’t been met.

October

The Columbia River’s peak season comes to a close in October, as the last of the Buoy 10 hype dies down and Salmon become scarce. Fly anglers will be gearing up for the winter Steelhead run.

November

Head to the Necanicum and Nehalem Rivers for winter Steelhead or fish the Columbia for keeper Sturgeon and Walleye. In the bays, anglers are making the most of bottom fishing.

December

Average temperatures dip at this time of year, so be sure to bundle up if you’re heading out. The bays have plenty of Crab and bottom fish to offer, while the rivers are teeming with Steelhead and more.
