Fishing in Folly Beach

Folly Beach fishing charters really make the most of the surrounding waters. Whether you’re combing the shallows, hitting the reefs, or speeding offshore, local captains have tailored their trips to give you the best time possible.

Red and Black Drum, Spotted Seatrout, and Flounder, are available year-round inshore. Tarpon also roll into town during the summer. Live bait is a popular choice here, but you can also use lures or flies if you want more of a challenge. Inshore charters usually last 4–6 hours, making them great for families and young kids.

Nearshore charters let you bottom fish for delicious Red Snapper, Black Seabass, and more around local reefs. They’re available year-round, although the bite’s best in winter. Trolling for King Mackerel is the main summertime activity. These trips last 6–8 hours and are ideal for beginners, older kids, and anyone with an empty freezer.

After something a little bigger? How about Wahoo, Tuna, Sailfish, and Marlin? You can find all this and more on deep sea charters. These all-out adventures last up to 12 hours, trolling around remote structure or out in the Gulf Stream. Most species are best in summer, except Wahoo, which peak in late spring.

Most charters in Folly Beach start from the public dock near Folly River Bridge. Some boats also launch out of Sunset Cay Marina near the island’s western tip. However, captains are often happy to meet at a spot near you. Anything they can do to make your day even more enjoyable!

Rules & Regulations

Saltwater fishing licenses are covered on all charters in South Carolina. If you’re targeting freshwater fish, you need a license for anyone aged 16 or older. Striped Bass are closed for harvest from June 1 to September 30. All other species are available year-round.

Folly Beach Fishing Seasons

January

Clear water makes for productive sight fishing for Redfish and Trout. Tasty Sheepshead and Black Drum happy to take your bait, too. The weather's cold, but the bite's hot, so throw on some layers and get out on the water!

February

The coldest part of the year should be behind us by now, but the fish are still feeling lazy. Bait tends to work better than lures, and can bring great results, with some big Redfish being caught this time of year.

March

In March, conditions are different day by day. The bite changes with the tide and there’s always the risk of a cold front. But if you’re up for the challenge, this can be one of the most fun times of year to fish!

April

As spring arrives, the fishing starts to settle. This can be a great time to fish in Folly Beach, with Wahoo showing up offshore and flood tides making for plenty of fun in the shallows.

May

If you’re looking for the biggest catch of your life, fish the harbor—we’re not kidding. Sharks and Bull Redfish are coming close to land and make for an action-packed day. Offshore, Mahi, Wahoo, and Tuna are showing up.

June

Look for Redfish and Trout chasing baitfish along the shoreline and see if they'll take your bait. Jack Crevalle is constantly surprising people with its fighting ability, while Snappers and Groupers are being caught offshore.

July

Folly Beach starts to get seriously crowded as summer sets in. See how remote you can go in the creeks and marshes or run offshore to escape the crowds. Night fishing can be a good way to beat the heat.

August

The heat is affecting the Redfish and Trout bite somewhat, but sportfishers don’t mind— Tarpon’s in town! Look for the Silver King along the beaches or head offshore for Snapper, Grouper, Mahi Mahi, and Tuna.

September

Summer’s changing to fall, with a chance of storms. Don’t let this put you off, though—the aftermath of a storm makes the fish bite even better, and fall fishing is excellent to begin with. This is the time for HUGE Bull Redfish.

October

If you’re not in Folly Beach, where are you? The creeks are loaded with fish, perfect for family trips, while Bull Redfish are also in town. Offshore, you have one last chance at big game before the end of the season.

November

November is the month for excellent fishing with few boats on the water to disturb it. Look for hungry Redfish, Trout, Sheepshead, and Black Drum — they're all fighting to take your bait.

December

It may be getting colder, but you’ll usually find that Folly Beach’s awesome fall fishing carries on into December. Put on some warm clothes and get ready to see schools of hundreds of Redfish on the flats and in the creeks.
