Fishing in Corpus Christi

Corpus Christi fishing charters offer something for every angler. Explore grass flats and sheltered lagoons in the bay, fill your coolers on the reefs, or battle big game pelagics offshore. It’s all here!

The main targets inshore are Redfish, Speckled Trout, and Flounder. Catch them with live baits or try lures for more of a challenge. Nearshore, you can bottom fish for delicious Red Snapper or take on hard fighters like Cobia (known locally as Ling). For the ultimate challenge, battle Tuna, Mahi Mahi, and even Billfish offshore.

Inshore charters are super family friendly. The waters are calm and the trips are short, usually four hours long. Beginners and older kids can also have a blast around nearshore reefs, although you’ll need a little more time. Offshore charters are designed for seasoned anglers. Eight hours is the minimum on these trips.

Most charters start from Clem’s Marina and Marker 37 Marina on Padre Island. However, smaller boats are sometimes flexible about where they launch. If you’re heading offshore, starting in nearby Port Aransas will cut down your travel time. Wherever you start your trip, you can expect a day full of fun and big fish!

Rules & Regulations

Fishing licenses are compulsory for all anglers aged 17 or older. This is the case in both fresh and saltwater. If you want to keep a trophy Redfish (28 inches or longer) you also need a separate Red Drum tag. Be aware that you can only keep Red Snapper in June and July offshore. You’re free to catch them all year long in state waters, though.

Corpus Christi Fishing Seasons

January

Make the trip to Baffin Bay for some huge Speckled Trout - it’ll be worth your while! Don't let anyone tell you you can't get some good fishing in the winter - this can be one of the best times to catch a giant, and the crowds are thin, too.

February

Windy and rainy, February feels like the coldest month in Corpus Christi. Warm up by seeking out Redfish in deeper areas and Trout on the flats. Check out the jetty rocks and pilings for a bait-stealing Sheepshead.

March

Temperatures slowly start to increase and we see the start of spring fishing in Corpus Christi. Redfish and Trout start to take the bait more greedily, while nearshore fishing can be good for Jack Crevalle when conditions allow.

April

April is known for its slightly unpredictable weather, with wind and rain being interspersed with sunshine. Temperatures reach averages of around 80 degrees and limits of Redfish and Speckled Trout are commonplace.

May

As temperatures rise, so do tourist numbers. The bays can be crowded, but that doesn't seem to put off the big Trout and Redfish that gather in the bay. Nearshore, Cobia, Jacks, and Kingfish can put up a good fight.

June

Federal Snapper season opens and licensed offshore boats book up quickly. Adventures anglers will enjoy targeting Shark at this time of year: Bull, Blacktip, and Hammerhead Sharks are all on top form.

July

July kicks off with the Texas Bluewater Kayak Classic - show off your skills or just marvel at the catches at the weigh in. Catch Kingfish offshore or look for Redfish, Trout, and Flounder in the bay.

August

Daytime temperatures are usually in the low 90s, making both the fish and the people search for shade. Seek out inshore fish in the deeper channels or head offshore for Mahi Mahi, Tuna, Kingfish, and Sharks.

September

Temperatures start to drop and the fishing in the bay becomes unmissable. Make the most of the kids being back at school and see how many hours you can spend on the water- the fishing is on fire both inshore and offshore.

October

As the weather settles into its fall patterns, adult Bull Redfish gather at the beaches and jetties to spawn. This is one of the best times to fish in Corpus Christi. The Flounder migration is also in full swing and will last through December.

November

Excellent fall fishing continues in November in Corpus Christi. Make sure you have a Redfish tag so you can keep one over-sized Redfish - you most probably will need it! Flounder gigging is not allowed in November.

December

Enjoy Texas' warm winter season by hooking up with an experienced guide. Not only is this the perfect Christmas present, this is a great time to fish. In fresh water, White Bass is biting in the Nueces River channel.
