Virginia Beach fishing charters open up a world of options. This bustling city overlooks the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay as it meets the Atlantic Ocean, meaning that all kinds of angling opportunities are possible. Hit the bay, inshore rivers, or the deep waters offshore, and there’s no end to what you can catch.

Striped Bass – or Rockfish, as it’s known here – is the name of the game in the Chesapeake Bay. This A-list creature provides ample entertainment, as you test your skills and strength to land some delicious meat. But that’s not all! You can land Flounder, Spotted Seatrout, Red and Black Drum, Seabass, Tautog, and even Cobia in these rich waters.

Head further out, and there’s more where that came from. Bigger Cobia rub shoulders with Amberjack and Groupers on the wrecks, before the serious fishing begins in the deep. The further you go, the better it gets. Over 40 miles out, you can get your hands on Tilefish, Mahi Mahi, Tuna, Wahoo, and Marlin, so get ready for a serious workout.

With such a range of fishing grounds to explore, it’s no surprise that there are plenty of trips on offer. Beginners and families can explore the calm waters of the bay on trips as short as a few hours. Meanwhile, serious anglers can spend a full day fishing. If you want to reach the deep sea fishing grounds, then you’ll need at least 10 hours, with overnight trips also possible.

Rules & Regulations

Fishing licenses are covered aboard all Virginia Beach fishing charters, so that’s one thing less to worry about. Your professional guide will also make sure you’re fishing within the law and sticking to all bag and size limits.

January

Striped Bass fever is in full swing in January in Virginia Beach. This is peak season for catching a 'Rockfish,' the local name for the Chesapeake Bay's favorite fish. Look out for migrating Humpback Whales, too!

February

Rockfishing continues to light up the Chesapeake Bay. Bring in these hard-fighting fish until your arms hurt – this will warm you up regardless of what the grim February weather throws at you.

March

Temperatures finally start to rise into the mid 60s by the end of the month. This is not peak fishing season yet but you can catch yourself a good deal at a hotel, along with some Striped Bass and Speckled Trout.

April

As temperatures start to get serious about transitioning to spring, so does the fishing. Yellowfin Tuna start to appear offshore, with Bluefin and Bigeye hot on their heels. Inshore, Black Drum and Speckled Trout are biting.

May

Spring is definitely here, and peak fishing season starts. Everything is biting from now through October. Look out for big Red Drum and Black Drum in the bay or large schools of Yellowfin off Virginia Beach.

June

Cobia start to invade the Chesapeake Bay, making for excellent sight fishing through September. As well as Yellowfin, offshore trips target Bigeye and Bluefin Tuna, along with monster White Marlin.

July

Summer fishing continues to bring in big pelagics and Virginia Beach charter fishing is the perfect way to have fun and escape the crowds. Don't miss the Virginia Beach Invitational Marlin Tournament.

August

White Marlin fishing gets even better than ever, while Blue Marlin remains excellent. The Virginia Beach Billfish Tournament makes the most of the bite, while Red Drum and Cobia are available inshore.

September

Temperatures cool and the crowds disperse. And while hotel prices might drop, the fishing doesn't. This is peak season for Bigeye and Yellowfin Tuna. Big Red Drum and Speckled Trout are the talk of the town inshore.

October

October is most certainly fall, and you will find the cooler temperatures agree. But if fall means one thing in Virginia Beach, it's Stripers. The best thing is, most of the summer species are still around, too.

November

Along with Stripers, November means fishing for Speckled Trout, Tautog, Flounder, and Seabass. Offshore, Yellowfin Tuna is still going strong, and the occasional Bluefin may even come close to shore.

December

Only the hardiest of fish remain in Virginia Beach in the winter. But hey, what does that matter when Rockfish is as hardy as they come? A festive meal of big Striped Bass never hurt anyone.

Have to say — Rudee Inlet is ideal if you want to get off the dock and, in less than 15 minutes, on to 42 feet of gorgeous water with the year round chance of a variety of fish.

Virginia Beach fishing is Ok, but the town its self is not friendly to people from out of town, they rip you off any way they can. If you go there to fish stay out of town and allow for time to get to your trip. The motels are in with the city to get what they can.

Virginia beach gives me small beach town vibes. Reminds me of Port Aransas or Rockport back in Texas. Fishing was definitely fun and the city is very clean. Bait shops close early so prepare accordingly. Food Lion in the city also sells bait if the shops are closed.

Take a private charter you double the amount of fish in one day and the experience is much better than those huge charter boats with tons of people to get caught up every time you drop the sinker.

Captain and 1st mate did a great job. It was my daughter 18th bday they went the extra mile to make it memorable. He did his best to get us above the fish. The captain even rocked the birthday song on the way in. Cleaned up our fish and all. I recommend this captain to anyone! You will have a blast! Thank you Capt. Smith!

Beautiful day on the water. One hour to and one hour back the submerged wrecks near the Chesapeake Light allowed for four hours on bottom fishing for black sea bass. Caught enough keepers for one good meal. Captain Chuck and Mate Mike were friendly and helpful. Great for novice and intermediate fishers.

It was a good day. 21 Sea Bass, 2 large Flounder, and a nice Trigger. Captain David and First Mate Tim were top-notch. Nice boat. Great hospitality and very attentive. We had rescheduled twice for weather and work, so too late for Mahi and Tuna. We wanted to get a trip in before the end of the year, so we decided to go wreck fishing instead. I think this year we'll do a better job getting out there in time for Mahi, but certainly with this crew and boat.

It’s at the end of the season so they were very up front with us about it being slow fishing before we confirmed. It was a gorgeous day. Our kiddo caught 2 little blues. Scenery and the boat were lovely. The captain spotted a pod of dolphin for us to watch. We did ask to cut our trip short because our kid was sea sick but they were so accommodating and helpful. Couldn't have asked for a better first mate (thank you Leah).

Wonderful trip - we had to move our trip by one day due to the weather, but Four Reels happily accommodated us. The seas were still running a little high, but we were able to still catch plenty of Spanish Mackerel and some Blues. Leah is competent, capable, knowledgeable, and friendly - fun afternoon, well worth it. We will be back.
