Fishing in Green Bay

One word to describe a Green Bay fishing experience? Unforgettable. It functions as an arm of Lake Michigan, which means it’s home to just as many fantastic species as the Great Lake itself. Stretching almost 120 miles from Big Bay de Noc to the mouth of the Fox River, there’s an impressive number of departure points to choose from, as well as additional waterways to explore. Time to grab your rods and reels and pay a visit to “La Baie Verte”!

Its proximity to Lake Michigan, as well as the Fox River, means that a whole host fish call Green Bay’s waters home. The bay itself is a world-famous Walleye fishery, especially during mid-spring, when they school up on the offshore reefs. There’s also a brag-worthy population of Muskies, and Smallmouth Bass can be found in shallow waters in early summer. Salmon and Trout occasionally make an appearance. And when winter comes, and the bay freezes? Time to ice fish for Walleye and Whitefish!

As well as the main bay, you can also explore Sturgeon Bay. Walleye, Musky, Northern Pike, Smallmouth Bass, and Perch can all be found here at different times of the year. Then there’s the Fox River, Green Bay’s principal tributary and a real fishing hotspot. Every spring, it turns into a spawning ground for Walleye, but that doesn’t mean that the angling action is limited to this season only. You can test your skills against these fish all year round!

You’ll find a whole host of Green Bay fishing charters dotted all around the shoreline of this body of water, with the city of Sturgeon Bay being a popular starting point. Local guides offer a variety of trips, from shorter adventures that are the perfect taster for newbies, to full day excursions for anglers looking to hit their Walleye limit.

Rules & Regulations

You’ll need to purchase a Wisconsin fishing license in order to enjoy these prolific waters. Some species such as Trout and Salmon require an additional stamp, and your guide will be able to tell you more about this.

Green Bay Fishing Seasons

January

It’s prime time for ice fishing Sturgeon Bay-style. Catch your limits of Perch and Whitefish. Head for the trophies, which could include Walleye and Northern Pike.

February

The second month of the year is absolutely excellent if you're a trophy Walleye seeker or Perch lover. The beautiful waters of Sturgeon Bay are your go-to place right now.

March

If you're looking to fill your cooler with Perch, hurry up, because the season usually closes on March 15th! However, Sturgeon Bay ice fishing for Whitefish, Perch, and Walleye is also on fire.

April

The Fox River holds pre-spawning Walleye until the end of the month. Once you’re done fishing the waters around the dam, head to Sturgeon Bay for Northern Pike or Green Bay forr Walleye.

May

The lower and mid-bay areas of Sturgeon Bay are absolutely incredible this time of year. You can reel in great numbers of eating-size Walleye. Smallmouth Bass are also around.

June

Walleye fishing in Sturgeon Bay and the Bay of Green Bay are on fire right now. The numbers of fish caught are pretty high. Trophies hunters go for Smallmouth Bass in the Bay.

July

The northern areas of Green Bay are all about great trophy Walleye action. The middle part of Sturgeon Bay also holds Walleye but anglers tend to concentrate on fishing for trophy Smallmouth Bass.

August

Walleye are biting like crazy in the middle part of Sturgeon Bay. Trophy Smallmouth Bass are being caught in the Bay of Green Bay, along with Musky!

September

Trophy Smallmouth Bass and Walleye fishing shouldn't be missed during this time of year. Musky and Pike trips are also pretty popular. You can go for a mixed-bag adventure!

October

Mid-fall is the best time of the year to catch a 50 lb Musky. Go for a trolling adventure or head to Sturgeon Bay for trophy Walleye. The Bay of Green Bay holds nice numbers of Smallies.

November

Winter is just around the corner and the fishing action is still hot. You can head to the lower part of Sturgeon Bay for trophy Musky or catch Smallmouth Bass in the Bay of Green Bay.

December

The lower part of Green Bay offers great Perch action if the waters are cold enough. If you're into ice fishing, this season can begin in mid-December if the weather cooperates.
