Fishing in Green Lake

Excellent fishing that Green Lake boasts might surprise you. Less than an hour’s drive from Lake Winnebago, you might expect to find similar angling here, but the experience you get is totally different. Green Lake is much smaller and much deeper – it’s the deepest inland lake in Wisconsin! If you're coming here for the first time, don't worry, Green Lake fishing charters will help you find your way to the best catch.

You can catch a good amount of Walleye in Green Lake, so don’t worry about missing out! There are some first-class Smallmouth Bass in the lake (some more than 5 pounds), as well as Largemouth Bass, Musky, and bulky Northern Pike. Lake Trout thrive here, enough to become the lake’s trophy fish. Targeting schools of White Bass and Perch is common, and you can also find bottom dwellers like Catfish. There’s lots of delicious Panfish, among which Crappie is the most popular.

Green Lake has it all! When you're picking a trip with one of the local fishing charters, you can go for a 4-hour beginner trip and target tasty Panfish. If you're more ambitious, take an 8-hour adventure to pursue trophy-sized Pike and Lakers. Trips can be adjusted to your skill level because there’s so much to choose from here! A year-round fishing season lets you drop a line even when the lake freezes over, and ice fishing is very good on Green Lake. For traditional fishing, the peak season runs from May–August.

You’ll find Green Lake fishing charters directly on the lake, there's a good number of them in the city of Green Lake as well. You can also count on guides from nearby lakes, since they trailer their boats. No matter what you already know about catching fish, you’ll definitely learn something new here. Come and spend an exciting day fishing at Green Lake!

Rules & Regulations

Some species in Green Lake have closed seasons, so take that into consideration when organizing your trip. Before you head out, you'll need a valid Wisconsin freshwater fishing license, even when you're going out with a guide. After that, you're ready to rumble, because your captain will cover all the equipment you might need.

Green Lake Fishing Seasons

January
Green Lake is frozen solid in January, so ice fishing is a-go! Yellow Perch and Lake Trout are the best targets. Come prepared for the cold and make sure that the ice is safe before getting out there.

February
The ice fishing season is still on, so better prepare warm clothing. If you don't want to be outside the whole time, make use of one of the ice shacks around the lake. You’ll go after Trout, Yellow Perch, and an ocassional Walleye.

March
Fishing in March is slow because it’s not cold enough for ice fishing, but still not warm enough to start your traditional fishing endeavors. Things will slowly pick up towards the end of the month, so practice patience until then.

April
In April, Green Lake is brimming with fish. Walleye and Pike are hunting in the shallows, Lake Trout are becoming more active in deeper waters, and there's quite a few of Panfish around.
May
Smallmouth Bass start their spawning season and you can find them in shallow water. There are some real lunkers out there. If you prefer finding some delicious fish fillets for dinner, Crappie are the way to go.

June
Ready for some heavy bottom dwellers? Go after Catfish! It will be a workout to get them into the boat, but it will be worth it. You’ll also have a great time targeting Largemouth Bass near the docks.

July
Lake Trout, the most wanted fish in Green Lake, is present in huge numbers. This is a great time to book a trip with one of the Green Lake fishing charters, they'll take you to the deepest sections of the water to target big Lakers.
August
Bass fishing is on fire in August, whether you're after Largies, Smallies, or Whites. The Musky bite is strong as well, and you’ll find them feeding around underwater vegetation. The best Musky action happens in the late morning.

September
Early fall is a very productive time on Green Lake, there's so many species to choose from. Lake Trout are the favorite catch this time of year, as well as Pike, Musky, Bass, and Panfish, especially Crappie.

October
It's getting colder on the water with each passing day, but there are still plenty of fish around. Targeting Musky in the fall will give you the best chances of a trophy catch. If you’re a beginner, go after Yellow Perch.

November
Things are starting to slow down in November, and most Green Lake fishing charters are taking a break over the holidays, until the hard-water season begins. Fall Trout and Yellow Perch are the best targets this month.

December
If you're feeling optimistic, you can try your fishing luck on Green Lake in December. We'd recommend getting some rest, enjoying the holidays and getting ready for upcoming ice fishing adventures.
