Fishing in Venice

If you’re visiting Venice, Louisiana, going fishing should be at the top of your list. Delicious inshore species and coveted pelagics make this one of the most productive fisheries in the US. Step aboard one of the many Venice, LA, fishing charters on offer and try your luck in this tiny Louisiana town!

Offshore anglers who come to Venice usually have one thing in mind – massive Tuna. It boasts a year-round population of Yellowfin Tuna, which is seasonally joined by Blackfin Tuna, Mahi Mahi, Sailfish, Wahoo, and White and Blue Marlin. These fish thrive here in large part due to to the offshore oil rigs and deep canyons.

Fast-paced action is a trait of inshore fishing in Venice, too. You can battle big Bull Redfish, Speckled Trout, Flounder, Tripletail, and Black Drum. Head to the inshore rigs and more tasty table fare awaits. Gag and Scamp Grouper, as well as Red Snapper, can be caught here.

If you came to catch Tuna, extended full day or overnight trips are the ones for you. You’ll need to travel between 30–100 miles to get to productive grounds, after all! For you inshore anglers, a half day trip lets you go home with a few fish, while a full day trip can see you really stock the freezer.

Venice is a tiny community, so finding a fishing charter shouldn’t be too difficult. You’ll find boat ramps dotted all along the Mississippi, whereas Venice Marina, located on the southernmost edges of town, is your best bet for sourcing a sportfishing vessel.

Rules & Regulations

All anglers over the age of 16 are responsible for purchasing a fishing license. If you’re fishing south of the “‘saltwater line,” you’ll need a Saltwater Fishing License, alongside a Louisiana Fishing License. If you plan on targeting certain pelagic species, make sure your captain covers Offshore Landing Permits for everyone on board, otherwise you’ll need to get your own.

Venice Fishing Seasons

January

Winter is no excuse not to get out on the water in Venice, Louisiana. This can be the best month of the year to catch a huge Yellowfin Tuna or Wahoo. Multiple hookups are not out of the ordinary!

February

Wahoo, Blackfin, and trophy Yellowfin Tuna are biting. Conditions may be windy, but clear waters bring fish closer to shore. Inshore, explore the marshes for Redfish, or look for Sheepshead around the rigs just off the coast.

March

Seek out Tripletail in shallow waters. What's more, Speckled Trout start to spawn. Rains can dump muddy water from the Mississippi into the Gulf, pushing pelagics further offshore.

April

This is the best time of year to land one of Louisiana's hottest species – Swordfish. These delicious deep water-dwelling Billfish can be targeted with electric reels to save a laborious fight.

May

Summer fishing begins in May in Venice, LA. This is prime time for offshore fishing, with deep sea favorites such as Mahi Mahi, Sailfish, and Marlin coming into play on the warm loop current from the Southern Gulf.

June

Don't miss the Cajun Canyons Billfish Classic if you want to qualify for the Offshore World Championship and the InTheBite Captain of the Year Cup. Even if you're not after a prize, charter a boat and go after a Marlin.

July

Everything is in season. Gag Grouper opens again, Wahoo is back in force, as are Blue and White Marlin, Mahi, and Sailfish. The Faux Pas Lodge Rodeo competition can't be missed.

August

Some of the offshore species have moved on, but now is coming into peak time to fish for White Marlin, which will start schooling up towards the end of the month. Look for huge Redfish inshore.

September

This is a great time of year to go after Cobia, which can be caught around the rigs in shallow water. Weighing in anything from 15 to 60 pounds, this is one of the most exciting fish to catch nearshore.

October

Inshore and nearshore fishing is really exciting at this time of year. It's one of the best times to explore Venice's shallow waters for Flounder, Speckled Trout, and huge schooling Redfish.

November

This is one of the best times to catch Wahoo in Venice and Yellowfin Tuna is more plentiful than ever. Meanwhile, inshore fishing remains good, with Redfish, Trout, Sheepshead, and Black Drum all biting well.

December

It's still warm in Venice, LA, so get out on the water! Redfish is as good as ever inshore, joined by Sheepshead, Drum, and Trout. Earn some real bragging rights by landing Yellowfin Tuna.
