Fishing in Port Vila

Getting on a Port Vila fishing charter will allow you to experience this world-famous fishery first hand! Located on the island of Efate, Port Vila is Vanuatu’s most developed town, serving both as the nation’s capital and main transport hub. With deep waters being only a short boat ride away and both natural and artificial reefs all around – the town’s rise in popularity amongst anglers is hardly surprising.

Thanks to the region’s climate and favorable position in the Pacific, the waters surrounding Port Vila are populated with prized game species year-round. Anglers owe this luxury to the “Marlin Highway” or “Marlin Alley,” which stretches several hundred miles. The notoriety that this fishing spot has gained over the years is the main reason why many anglers dreaming of landing a Grander Marlin have made the trip to this remote town.

However, full day Marlin expeditions are certainly not the only fishing around Port Vila. From casting poppers for Giant Trevally to trying your luck at natural or artificial reefs, there’s something for all types of anglers. Target species vary slightly from season to season, but Wahoo, Yellowfin Tuna, Dogtooth, Skipjack, Sailfish, Mahi Mahi, Amberjack, Barracuda, and many more are all possible targets if Marlin’s not on your mind.

Once you get to Port Vila, finding a charter won’t be a difficult task. Vila Bay is home to several world-class sportfishing boats and their skippers will eagerly await your arrival.

Rules & Regulations

In Vanuatu, fishing licenses for guest anglers are provided by the charter. The capital’s skippers are true professionals and will provide you with everything you need for your adventure. Many skippers only do catch and release, so make sure to clarify the catch policy before booking.

Port Vila Fishing Seasons

January

Each year the fishing in Port Vila gets hot right from the get-go! Blue and Black Marlin are here and making their presence known. Additionally, Yellowfin Tuna and a variety of reef fish are all here to test your skills.

February

Hurricane season is at its peak, so make sure to consult local weather forecasts before booking a trip or heading out to the sea. Once out there, you’ll be on Marlin, Tuna, Trevally, and others, just a few minutes in.

March

We’re still in the hurricane season but the local fishery is living up to its reputation nonetheless. Find a calm time window and head out to the Marlin Highway in search of a Grander you’ll be telling tales about for years to come.

April

The hurricanes are becoming less likely but it’s still a good idea to be on the lookout. The fishing is changing with the season as well but Blue Marlin and Yellowfin Tuna are still great targets in April.

May

In May, the action is shaken up by the arrival of peak Mahi Mahi season. This certainly doesn’t mean that Marlin and Tuna are nowhere to be found, just that you’ll have to look a bit harder.

June

Mahi Mahi are now joined by Sailfish and Wahoo, putting the island in the middle of red-hot action. Many trips in this period tend to combine peak season pelagic fishing with a productive visit to the reefs.

July

This month marks the beginning of some of the coolest weather the island nation sees all year. Although this change of setting may require you to update the dress code, the fishing isn’t changing yet!

August

For anglers after Billfish, August is the month that brings an unprecedented variety of targets. Sailfish, Swordfish, and Striped Marlin are all starting to make an appearance, daring anglers to test them.

September

Soon, it will be back to the warm weather characteristic for this part of the world. Until then you can keep yourself warm and busy battling feisty pelagics species such as Sailfish, Mahi Mahi, Wahoo, and Striped Marlin.

October

This is the peak month for Striped Marlin and Blue Marlin so you better be ready to take full advantage of this opportunity! Before heading out to the Marlin Alley, shake the rust off by reeling in some hard-fighting fish at the reefs.

November

Marlin madness is in full swing come November! Black Marlin is now at its peak, Blue Marlin is also still going strong, and even a few Striped Marlin are still there to be caught by Port Vila anglers.

December

As the year comes to a close we’re back in the hurricane season. Keep the weather conditions in mind when planning your trip and consult your skipper for the best time to go after those Marlin, Yellowfin, and others.

What anglers said about fishing in Port Vila

Weather is always an issue, if you get seasick, take the tablets or whatever a few hours before. Dont expect miracles as there are no guarantees when fishing.

Just enjoy the experience and go with someone professional like crusoe fishing charters. Some people went with locals and their boats look very small and no catch.
