Fishing in Fraser River

Fraser River fishing guides are here to show you one of the best places in the world to catch fish. Stretching over 850 miles, the Fraser River is the longest in BC. It has a legendary reputation for impressive Salmon runs and huge Sturgeon, which attracts anglers from around the world. But this doesn’t mean you have to be a hardcore angler to drop a line here. With a good local guide, you’ll get the hang of it fast.

For some anglers, Sturgeon fishing is reason enough to visit the Fraser River. You can go after this massive, dinosaur fish year round but it’s best to be here from April–November so you can catch a wider variety of species. Millions of Salmon migrate upstream and you’ll have a chance to catch Chinook, Pink, Coho, Sockeye, and Chum Salmon. In early spring, Steelhead is present in high numbers.

Even half day trips are enough to have a successful day on the water, but if you’re after feisty fish like Sturgeon, it’s better to take a full day trip. The best spots on the Fraser River are in the lower part, so search for local guides in Chilliwack, Harrison Mills, and Mission all the way to Vancouver.

Rules & Regulations

Every angler over 16 years old needs to have a freshwater fishing licence. Sturgeon are a protected species, so they have to be released. A stock recovery program for Chinook Salmon was established in 2019, which has led to lower bag limits during summer. If you’re targeting Steelhead, be sure to buy a Steelhead Conservation Licence.

Fraser River Fishing Seasons

January
The coldest month of the year doesn’t promise much rod-bending action. You can still go after Steelhead or small Chinook Salmon.

February
Steelhead are dominant in February, as their peak season approaches. Salmon are very rare at this time of year and any specimens you do find will be small.

March
Peak Steelhead season starts in March, so grab your rod and go after a tasty catch. There’s slightly more Sturgeon in the river but the peak season hasn’t quite started yet.

April
Sturgeon numbers skyrocket in April and the game is on! Catch one of the oldest species in the world and cross it off your bucket list.

May
Sturgeon fishing is at its finest, so be sure to book your spot in time. Steelhead and Chinook Salmon will also provide great action.

June
Catch the largest Salmon! The Chinook run has begun and some of them weigh up to 50 pounds. It gets even better in June.

July
Right after Chinook, Sockeye Salmon start their peak season. They’re not as big, but rumor has it they taste the best!

August
Every odd year, August marks the beginning of Pink Salmon’s peak season. They’re an easy target, so make your trip more exciting by adding Chinook Salmon or Sturgeon to your target list.

September
In September, Coho enter the scene and almost all the local Salmon species are present and at their peak. Don’t forget that Sturgeon fishing is still amazing!

October
Chum Salmon are the last to arrive, but this is a fish worth waiting for. They put up a great fight and you’ll enjoy your trip every step of the way.

November
There’s still lots of Chum and Chinook in the river but other Salmon species are mostly gone by now. This is your last chance of the year to enjoy great Sturgeon fishing.

December
The Salmon runs are over but you can still catch some Chum. Sturgeon and Steelhead are other possible targets.
