Fishing in Lake Erie - Canada

Lake Erie may be the smallest of the Great Lakes when it comes to volume, but the angling opportunities it provides are seriously huge. Looking to explore its fish-filled northern waters? With a plethora of Lake Erie fishing charters on offer, Canada is the perfect place to start your adventure!

The entirety of this freshwater fishery is packed full of some prized species, with the majority of them inhabiting its Canadian waters. Smallmouth Bass, Walleye, Perch, and a side of Steelhead – what’s not to love? You’ll also occasionally come across Musky and Panfish species, and something is always biting year-round. If you can brave those cold Canadian winters, you’ll be rewarded!

The most common way to fish here is drift fishing alongside a local captain. It’s a real “back to basics” way of casting a line that truly contributes to the magic of fishing this Great Lake! Visit in winter, and ice fishing may be on the cards, too. Trips generally run anywhere from 5–10 hours. New anglers can get a great introduction to the lake on a shorter trip, whereas a longer trip allows for more time to reach the lake’s deepest spots.

You’ll find charters captains dotted all along the Ontario side of Lake Erie, but some spots in particular stand out. Just south of Niagara Falls, you’ll find departure points such as Port Erie, Crystal Beach, and Port Colbourne. Head to the northwestern side, and you’ll find Leamington and Port Talbot. And there’s a whole host of locations in between, too.

Rules & Regulations

If you’re over the age of 18, you’ll need to purchase a valid fishing license to cast a line on Lake Erie, even if you’re fishing alongside a local charter. You’ll need an Outdoors Card, too. Luckily, it’s a simple process, and you can purchase both of these online.

Lake Erie - Canada Fishing Seasons

January

Brave the Great White North’s winter weather, and you’ll be in for a treat. Head out on an ice fishing trip and discover why Lake Erie is considered the “Walleye Capital of the World!”

February

The ice begins to melt and the weather starts looking up, which means you’ll be able to venture out onto the lake by boat. And what’s biting? Plenty of Steelhead!

March

Spring has sprung, and it brings with it the arrival of Walleye, Walleye, and more Walleye. Get ready to fill the freezer!

April

Canada provides great access to Lake Erie’s Western Basin. April is the time to visit it if you’re looking for Trophy Walleye! Catches weighing in at 9–12 pounds are common.

May

Keen Lake Erie anglers impatiently await the arrival of May. Why? It’s when this waterway explodes into a Smallmouth Bass fishery! Cast your line around the lake’s many rock piles for the best results.

June

Walleye and Largemouth Bass fishing remains hot, and that’s not the only thing – the weather is seriously pleasant during this month. Grab some sunscreen and head out to the lake!

July

Bass fishing is as strong as ever, and the end of the month sees the arrival of Steelhead. It’s the perfect month to drift across the lake in the sun, waiting for your trophy catch to bite.

August

Aggressive, hard-fighting Steelhead can be hooked during this month, as well as that Lake Erie staple, Walleye. Smallmouth Bass fishing is still fully in swing, while Yellow Perch are plentiful, too.

September

This is when the lake’s Canadian waters shine even more. Perch and Bass fishing is as hot as it gets, and huge Walleye can be found lurking in the lake’s deeper waters.

October

Head to isolated rock pilings for the chance to experience a Bass bonanza. Perch fishing is still on fire, and Steelhead can be found meandering through the lake’s tributaries.

November

The lake’s waters start to cool, but you’ll find that the Bass fishing action is as hot as ever. Walleye fishing remains plentiful, too, so come test your skills against ‘em!

December

Wrap up warm and end your year in the right way by heading out onto Lake Erie. Walleye can be found in droves in the Western Basin, with late-night fishing being especially productive.

My dad and I had an amazing trip! We couldnโ€™t keep the rods in the water. Limit out on Walleye and caught a nice Rainbow trout. The boat had a beautiful view up top for some extra seating. Mike was so kind and full of some great information for us newbies. Even filleted them up for us for a small fee. Couldnโ€™t recommend this charter enough.
