Fishing in Biscayne Bay

Not many bodies of water can boast world-class fishing just a stone’s throw from one of the greatest cities on the planet. But fishing in Biscayne Bay offers just that. Escape the hustle and bustle of downtown Miami and experience what dreams are made of. Cast your line in these productive waters against the city’s backdrop, and you could land yourself a trophy fish.

Grassy flats, inlets, reefs, and much more characterize Biscayne Bay’s fishing grounds, and that means there’s something for everyone. Beginners can target Spotted Seatrout, Spanish Mackerel, Ladyfish, and Mangrove Snapper. Meanwhile, the more experienced can go after some of Florida’s most sought-after inshore fish. Snook, Permit, Bonefish, Jack Crevalle, Redfish, and even Tarpon can be found here, so get ready to really test your skills and strength!

With so much fishing on offer, it’s no surprise that there are plenty of trips that cater to all kinds of angler. You can tailor your trip to sight casting, fly fishing, or trolling, and you’re sure to catch what you want. Families can take advantage of trips as short as a couple of hours, while pros can spend a full day or longer on the water, fine-tuning their angling skills.

Wherever you are around the bay, you’ll have no trouble in finding a charter to take you out. From south Miami down to the Everglades, and out to Key Biscayne, fishing is a way of life here. There’s always a captain waiting to show you what fishing here is all about.

Rules & Regulations

When fishing with a charter in Biscayne Bay, your license is covered by your captain. Other rules you should be aware of are that Tarpon fishing is strictly catch and release, while many other species have closed seasons. Fishing with an experienced guide will make sure you’re up to date with all these regulations.

Biscayne Bay Fishing Seasons

January

At the very beginning of the year, you can go out to fish for Snapper, Jacks, Ladyfish, and Barracuda. The Tarpon bite is solid, so dress for the weather and head out.

February

Enjoy fair weather and good angling action in February. It’s not too warm in the bay, and that means that you can easily catch anything from Tarpon and Jack Crevalle to Barracuda and Snapper.

March

Spring is just around the corner and the fish can feel it, that’s why they come out to play. Permit and Tarpon fishing is excellent, while Snapper and Barracuda are biting left and right around the reefs.

April

Grab your rod and go fishing, because April is the month to do it! Days are warm, but not too hot, and just about any species you can think of is active this month – Snook, Bonefish, Permit, and Tarpon, to name a few.

May

Fish, fish everywhere! Wherever you cast your line in May, you’ll hear your reel screaming soon enough. Big Tarpon, colorful Snapper, hard-fighting Snook, Bonefish, Permit – they’re all here for the taking.

June
The Snook season is over, but there’s still plenty of fish in the bay. Whether it’s Sharks, Grouper, Snapper, or Bonefish, Permit, and Tarpon, you can land it in June, so come and warm up for summer!
July

It’s hot on the water, and a great way to get around it is to get out early in the morning. There’s plenty of Snapper around, along with Barracuda, Cobia, Tarpon, and Bonefish – so there's something for everyone.

August

Summer isn’t going anywhere, and neither are the fish. This is a great month to bring home a mixed bag. Depending on where you go, anything from Redfish and Spotted Seatrout to Tarpon and Bonefish is game.

September

Finally, the heat is giving way to crisp fall mornings and there’s nothing like a bit of fishing to start your day. In September, think Snook, Permit, Jack Crevalle, Tarpon, and Bonefish, and you're in for a treat!

October

This is the best month to fish for Bonefish, Barracuda, Cobia, and Jack Crevalle, though other species are present as well. You can also find some big Tarpon and Snook out there, so go after 'em all!

November

Water temperatures are dropping and, while the fish might be a bit lazy, they still won’t be able to resist a good setup. You can target Bonefish, Snook, and Jacks, and let’s not forget about Snapper and Barracuda.

December

Snapper is the star of the show in the last few weeks of the year, so Mangrove, Yellowtail, Mutton, and many more are all on the menu. The bonefishing action is more than solid, so see out the year in style.
