Fishing in Central Florida

The Central Florida fishing scene is like the Sunshine state in general – a mix of everything. Stretching from Tampa Bay on the west, across the Orlando metropolitan area to Cape Canaveral on the east, the region offers lots of fishing possibilities. Whether you’re fishing with your kids for the first time or with a group of hard-core anglers, you’ll find a trip that suits everyone.

Red Snapper is the top priority for most anglers fishing in the Gulf of Mexico. The legendary season is open in June and July. The area also attracts anglers looking to hook Redfish, Snook, Tarpon, Kingfish, and all kinds of Snapper and Grouper. Inshore trips are the most popular, which is perfect for novices or families with kids.

The central area around Orlando is famous for its numerous lakes and ponds. You can find some of the best Largemouth Bass fishing in the US, which is the reason so many tournaments are being held here annually. If we had to pick one spot, it would be Lake Toho, as several Bass records were broken here.

The east coast of Central Florida is known for Daytona Beach, Port Canaveral, Vero Beach, and others. If you take an inshore trip, you’ll target similar species than the ones in the Gulf. The advantage of the east coast is its proximity to deep water, so you’ll reach offshore fishing grounds in less time. If you’re hoping to catch Sailfish, this is the place to be!

Fishing with a guide means your license and equipment are covered, so you’re all set. The greatest advantage of fishing in Central Florida is that it never stops. Join this year-round adventure!

Central Florida Fishing Seasons

January
Start the year by catching some huge Largemouth Bass in Lake Toho! There’s lots of Crappie and Smallmouth Bass as well, to make the trip even more interesting.

February
Inshore fishing is great in February, especially if you go after Redfish, Black Drum, Sheepshead, and Flounder. These are all great targets for beginners.

March
In March, nearshore trips get increasingly better. Target Kingfish, Spanish Mackerel, and Cobia on the east coast.

April
If you’re in the Gulf, take a full day trip and head out offshore for Mahi Mahi, Barracuda, and Wahoo. An extended trip could also bring you Tuna!

May
Visit the flats for the Silver King – Tarpon! This magnificent fish puts up a great fight and it’s not easy to catch one.

June
Red Snapper season is on, so make sure to book your spot on time! Or take this opportunity to go after Marlin and Mahi Mahi while everyone’s after Snapper.

July
The season for Red Snapper is almost over, so better hurry up! If you’re up for something more relaxing, stay inshore for Redfish and Flounder.

August
August is the perfect time to go far offshore and target Sailfish, Marlin, Tuna, and other big game species.

September
Have you ever tried fly fishing? Catch Permit in the shallow water using this technique. You need to be patient and precise.

October
Catfish, Crappie, and Largemouth Bass are great targets if you want to take a freshwater trip. Visit one of the lakes around Orlando and you can’t go wrong.

November
Go after Grouper and Snapper if you enjoy bottom fishing. For some adrenaline-pumping action, target fast Wahoo in the offshore waters.

December
End the year by catching great nearshore fish such as Cobia, Spanish Mackerel, Kingfish, and Barracuda.
