Fishing in Florida Bay

Fishing in Florida Bay can be summed up in one word: endless. Located between Florida’s mainland and the Keys, this bay has over 1,000 square miles waiting to be explored. With countless fish species, a season that never ends, and gorgeous shallows stretching for miles, it's no wonder this estuary is a go-to spot for many anglers. And you won’t be the only one who’s fishing here – the area has lots of birds wading the shallows in search of a snack.

There’s way too many fish species in the area to be listed in one text, so we can only scratch the surface. The most desirable ones are Redfish, Spotted Seatrout, Tarpon, Snapper, Bonefish, Snook, and Permit. Since the average depth of the bay is 3 feet, the tide must be right for a successful trip. This is why fishing with a local guide is crucial. Your guide can also recommend how long your trip should be in order to catch your favorite fish.

Even offshore species are common in the area, such as Mahi Mahi, Wahoo, Marlin, Barracuda, or Tuna. Fishing guides can help you catch these too, they’ll just go in a different direction than usual. You’ll still depart from the Florida Keys but go south instead of north.

There are lots of departure points you can choose, from Key Largo, Tavernier, and Islamorada,  all the way to Marathon. Fishing guides will cover your license and equipment, but double-check whether this also includes fly fishing equipment if you’re a fly angler.

The best way to explore Florida Bay is by fishing. Get familiar with the magic of endless mangroves, basins, and backcountry, and catch some tasty fish on the way.

Snappers all around! Mangrove, Mutton, and Yellowtail Snapper make for good sport and an even better lunch after the trip.

Do Cobia, Kingfish, Spanish Mackerel, or Jack Crevalle sound like a challenge? Take a nearshore trip and catch one of these.

Barracuda and Sailfish are waiting offshore if you’re up for some big game fishing. Inshore trips can bring lots of Redfish and Spotted Seatrout.

The Silver King is back on the throne! Tarpon fishing is amazing, so don’t miss out! You can also catch some Bonefish and Permit on the way.

Blue Marlin, Mahi Mahi, and Swordfish are just what you need for some good trolling action. Book a full day trip if you’re after these trophies, because they won’t make it easy for you!

Tarpon and Snook are ruling the waters of Florida Bay. If you want to level up your game, try catching them on a fly.

Snapper, Bonito, Tarpon, and Permit can be caught even on a short fishing trip. You’ll be back at the marina with some tasty fish in the cooler before lunch.

Mahi Mahi, Swordfish, and Wahoo are yours to catch...but not without a fight! If you’re up for some bottom fishing action, go after Gag Grouper.

Permit, Tarpon, and Bonefish can be found in the crystal clear water. Just look for a glistening reflection of the sun beneath the surface – these fish are like mirrors.

Go after Snapper, Spotted Seatrout, Redfish, or Bonefish. It’s hard to pick just one, so take a longer trip and catch them all!

Kingfish and Spanish Mackerel are anglers’ favorites! Even if you’re a beginner, you have good chances of landing one.

Inshore fishing is as good as ever but don’t forget the offshore spots! Sailfish, Wahoo, and Yellowfin Tuna will give you amazing fishing action.

"Fishing with Ben"

Rob M. fished with Leatherneck Backcountry Fishing on February 26, 2020

February is just a little early for the big tarpon run. I was hoping to get lucky on some early arrivals. It didn't happen so changed the game plan, and had a blast the rest of the day smashing all different species of fish of all different sizes. Don't be afraid to adapt or even change your game plan. You might enjoy it. I loved it!
