Fishing in Lake Erie

Lake Erie is one of those fisheries that just keeps on giving. It’s vast, spreading over four states and two countries, and is brimming with sport fish. Passionate freshwater fishermen come here to land a trophy of their dreams, and Lake Erie fishing charters are there to help them.

When locals say that this is the “Walleye Capital of the World,” they’re not exaggerating. In the summer months, there’s no better place to hook into one big, feisty Walleye after another. Add to that scores of Smallmouth Bass and jumbo Yellow Perch, and you’ve got a feast. Not enough? Rainbow, Brown, and Lake Trout are on the menu, as well as Muskellunge, Northern Pike, and Salmon species.

What you’d like to target will determine the part of the lake you’ll fish, as well as the type of trip you should book. Most Lake Erie fishing charters offer half day excursions that are perfect for families and where you’ll fill your cooler with delicious fillets. Full day trips will take you offshore in search of lunkers. Bear in mind that the weather can change very quickly on the lake, so make sure to bring your rain gear.

Lake Erie is huge, so you’ll easily find a place with great access to productive fishing grounds. Port Clinton, Lakeside Marblehead, Lorain, Cleveland, and Erie are just some of the most popular departure points.

Rules & Regulations

You’ll need a valid freshwater fishing license visibly displayed on your clothing before you start fishing. If you’re going after Trout and/or Salmon, be sure to get a Combined Fishing Permit. It is unlawful to fish, spearfish, wade, or possess fishing equipment in or along the Nursery Waters.

Lake Erie Fishing Seasons

January

Even if the weather is cold, ice-fishing is hot. Deep waters near the shallows, rivers, and reefs are good for die-hard Walleye enthusiasts, and there’s plenty of good Perch for everyone. Be careful on the ice!

February

The weather is pleasant, and the same goes for Rainbow Trout fishing for those who are up to a bit of a challenge. Rainbows appear in the creeks on the west side of the lake. Streams are shallow and clear, which makes them perfect for spotting your prey.

March

Late March brings some hot Walleye fishing. Head to the reefs or go two miles out of Port Clinton to fill the ice-chest. We can’t forget about good numbers of Northern Pike and Musky eating their way through the lake.

April

The mid-spring weather might be unpredictable, so come prepared. That said, April is great for jig fishermen. Head to the western basin for Walleye, casting over reefs and trolling in deep waters. It’s not uncommon to reel in 9–12 lb trophies.

May

Trolling and vertical jigging will work like a charm on hungry post-spawn Walleye. Later in May, you can head to the North East Marina for Rock Bass. Trout fishing is very good this time of year, and Pike are biting as well.

June

Walleye fishing is excellent, and there’s more fish than you could catch at the beginning of the summer. Bass action is just as good, and the best part is – it’s only going to get better from here!

July

The weather is warm, but if you’re hitting the offshore waters, be ready for things to get cooler and bring a light jacket. There’s no better time to do some drift fishing for big Walleye than on a calm July evening. You’ll probably find some Perch as delicious bycatch as well.

August

The Yellow Perch bite heats up and is at its best during the hottest month of the year! Use planer boards to find Walleye all the way at the bottom, and Bass fishing is on point. The water’s temperature plays a big role in how active the bite will be.

September

The fall brings top-notch Bass and Perch action, especially on the Canadian part of Lake Erie. Trophy Walleye are ready to pounce your setup with abandon in deep waters. Salmon and Trout begin to school, and soon, they’re going to become the stars of the show.

October

There’s no rest for avid Walleye chasers, and October is a good time to hit the waves and start reeling. Perch fishing is just on fire! Head to the tributaries to get your share of Rainbow and Brown Trout.

November

As the waters cool down, their inhabitants are slowing their hunt for food, though you can still find more than solid Walleye and Bass out there. Pike love lower temperatures, and there’s nothing that will keep Perch away from a tasty morsel you offer.

December

When winter comes, Walleye start staging in the western basin. Late-night fishing can be exciting and productive if you don't let the winter winds discourage you. If you’re not a fan of the cold, maybe get some rest and enjoy the holiday season. The fish will be here next year.
