Come fishing in Lake Travis year-round and get your hands on Bass of all kinds, as you indulge in a day of exciting angling. After a devastating drought between 2011 and 2014, the Lake is quickly re-establishing itself as a prime fishing destination. This man-made reservoir along the Columbia River offers a haven for anglers just out of Austin, providing some of northern Texas’ most productive waters.

What kind of fish can I catch in Lake Travis?

Bass

Bass is the name of the game when it comes to fishing on Lake Travis. These rich waters are home to over five kinds of tough-fighting and delicious Bass, which means you’re always in for a fun-filled and fruitful day out.

Target the nation’s favorite freshwater fish, Largemouth Bass, in spring and fall. These creatures may be smaller in Lake Travis than what you’re used to, but they still promise to put up an intense fight to get off the end of your line. Most guides prefer to practice catch and release on these beauties to keep up stocks, but you may be able to take one home as a prize.

Hybrid, White, Striped, and Spotted Bass all make for an exciting addition to the Largemouth. From jigging for White Bass in the creeks in spring to trolling for huge Stripers in summer, there’s no end to the fun you can have targeting the best of the rest of these sought-after species.

Sunfish

If you’re looking to try your hand at fishing for the first time, then Sunfish can be a great way to start off. These small, delicious creatures will give you the chance to practice your skills, all the while landing plenty of meat. Come in summer for the best results, and bring the whole family for a few days, taking in the range of outdoor activities on offer.

Catfish

Don’t worry if you can only come to Lake Travis in winter, though. Catfish come out to play from December onwards. Blue, Flathead, and Channel Catfish are at their biggest when the weather gets colder, so hop aboard a fishing charter and get ready for an exciting trip to warm you up, before heading home with a hearty meal.

How to Prepare

Your Lake Travis fishing guide will most likely be a passionate, experienced angler with their own boat and all the latest fishing gear. Aboard a purpose-built bass boat, you’ll have everything you need for a productive day, with most captains even welcoming beginners and children to get hooked on fishing. All you’ll need to do is bring some drinks and snacks aboard, and grab your TX freshwater fishing license before coming aboard and settling in for a thrilling day.

Whatever time of year it is, fishing on Lake Travis is open to you. Bring the whole family along and discover this beautiful body of water in thrilling style!

January
What better way to start the year than with a holiday? Come to Lake Travis in January and forget about those winter blues and get your fish on against monster Catfish and a range of Bass!
February
While the weather may not be getting any better, the fishing certainly is with White Bass filling up the creeks, adding to the Catfish frenzy. Get your fish on in February and get ready for the season.
March
The season is almost upon Lake Travis, with Largemouth Bass making their annual spring run through the reservoir. Target these beauties along with Stripers and White Bass and take advantage of the new birth.
April
It’s all systems go in April, as the fishing hits its stride and the townsfolk do their most to attract tourists. Get out on the water or simply come and enjoy Springfest, and make the most of the Lake’s range of entertainment.
May
There’s still plenty of Largemouth, White, and Striped Bass come May, with the arrival of Sunfish providing the chance for beginners to land their first catch. Come and feel the heat as it starts warming up!
June
Summer’s here, so the lake comes alive with events all over. Combine your fishing trip with a visit to “Jaws on the Water” where you can watch movies right on the heart of this stunning lake.
July
As peak tourist season kicks in, you’ll have plenty in the way of entertainment in Lake Travis. Visit a water park, go hiking, ziplining, or even scuba diving in the clear blue waters to see what you’d like to catch.
August
There’s never been a better time to come fishing than in August. Under the warm summer sunshine, plenty of Bass, Sunfish, and Catfish will be biting to ensure a fun-filled trip on the lake.
September
There’s no sign of it slowing down in September, although the lake will get quieter. Come and make the most of the peaceful waters and catch the last of the Sunfish rush before the Bass come back in numbers.
October
Largemouth Bass swarm to Lake Travis in fall, giving you the chance for some serious game fishing against these tough-fighting creatures. Come aboard and prove to everyone that the season’s not done.
November
With the change in weather, there’s a marked decline in activity on the lake. Don’t let that fool you though, with Largemouth Bass still offering plenty in the way of exciting action. Come and fill up before the holidays!
December
The end of the year may be the time to look back on a successful past 12 months, but that shouldn’t stop you from seizing the moment. Take advantage of the returning Catfish and end the year in style.

As you'd expect, it's quite hot in the summer. But we had a great time and the heat didn't really bother us.

Top notch. We had an awesome time. Hunter is great for fishermen of any level of skill or experience. He’s knowledgeable and he’s easy to work with. He’s great with kids. He works hard to put you on fish. We walked away with a great catch and great memories, for sure. My son said later it was one of the highlights of the year for him. We couldn’t have asked for more from Hunter. Definitely satisfied!

We booked a half day early, hit the water as the sun rose, and had a great day. Ray did a great job of offering us tips, working different spots, and making sure we caught some fish. Ray is a real expert and was very patient with two less experienced anglers. 😀 This was a great trip.
