Fishing in Lake Winnebago

When you’re ready for an authentic Wisconsin experience, join fishing guides on Lake Winnebago! The Badger State’s largest inland lake boasts high numbers of popular fish, especially Walleye and Bass. Locals don’t let anything stop them from catching these fish, not even the thickest ice on the lake. Whether you come here in the middle of winter or during the summer heat, you can count on a Lake Winnebago fishing guide to show you what’s in store.

Walleye is arguably the king of this northern lake and the best time to target this fish is early spring. Musky and Northern Pike hide in quiet, grassy areas. You’ll find surprising numbers of both Largemouth and Smallmouth Bass here, given that they prefer warmer water. There’s also a fair amount of Yellow Perch and different types of Trout.

Local guides offer either four-hour or eight-hour trips, depending on how long you want to stay on the water. Trips are usually a seasonal “mixed bag” but you can also focus on just one fish if you want. Even though the fishing season lasts year round, one of the best times is from May–August. The ice fishing season depends on how thick the ice is, but usually takes place in January or February.

Most Lake Winnebago fishing guides depart from Oshkosh. This spot is particularly convenient If you’re coming from out of town, because it’s close to the airport.

Rules & Regulations

All anglers over 16 years old need to purchase a freshwater fishing license. While most species are open to harvest year round, Musky and Trout must be released from Jan–April. Sturgeon are always limited to catch and release.

Lake Winnebago Fishing Seasons

January
Start the year by ice fishing for Yellow Perch! They’re biting even when the water’s cold, so you can expect some fun jigging action.

February
Yellow Perch provide the hottest bite in the coldest of months. You can also target Walleye if it’s not super freezing.

March
March offers the last days of ice fishing. You can go after Yellow Perch, Walleye, or Lake Sturgeon.

April
Come April, all the fish seem to be hungrier than ever. There’s more of everything, so you can go after Musky, Pike, Trout, Walleye, and Perch.

May
May is a great time to go after Walleye! You’ll also have great chances of catching Pike, just look for them in grassy shallows.

June
There’s plenty of action in the shallows during June! This is where you’ll find lots of Pike as well as Largemouth and Smallmouth Bass.

July
Go after Musky whenever you see rocky reefs or underwater vegetation. Bass fishing is amazing too!

August
Trout fishing is at its peak at the end of summer, so target Brown and Lake Trout. If you want something more feisty, go after Smallmouth Bass.

September
Cruise the lakeshore for Trout! They move to shallow water as temperatures drop. Last chance to catch great Bass this year!

October
Cloudy fall days are great if you’re after Musky! This is the best time of year to catch trophy-sized fish.

November
You’ll have a great time fishing for Yellow Perch around rocky areas, especially on a windy day. Steelhead fishing is good too.

December
Yellow Perch and Steelhead feeding in the shallows will give you the best action at this time of year.
