Fishing in Matagorda Bay

Come on down to one of the biggest estuaries on the Gulf Coast, and let one of many Matagorda Bay fishing guides take you on a trip of a lifetime. Made up of the West and East Bays, Matagorda Bay is a shallow water fishing haven. With a variety of natural habitats, the abundance of wildlife here makes for a perfect outing, as well as an action-packed fishing adventure.

With rivers, bayous, and creeks all around, you’ll have no issue finding a good spot to sink your line in. Speckled Trout, Redfish, and Flounder are the stars of the show in Matagorda Bay, with Gafftopsail Catfish, Black Drum, Sheepshead, Ladyfish, and Jack Crevalle also making regular appearances.

Depending on your ambitions, you can choose from a variety of trips to go on. If you’re looking for an introduction to the area, or a nice family outing, booking a half day trip will do the job. If you want to maximize your chances of filling your bags with delicious table fare, however, book a full day trip. Looking for a special experience? Consider going on a Flounder gigging trip for an adrenaline rush.

Given the size of Matagorda Bay, it’s no surprise that you’ll find fishing guides all along its shores. Some of the most popular places to visit are Matagorda and Port O’Connor, but you’ll find charters in places like Magnolia Beach and Palacios as well. Just head on down to the water and you’ll be fishing in no time!

Rules & Regulations

When it comes to fishing regulations in Matagorda Bay, you’ll be required to have a Texas fishing license. Everyone age 17 or older needs to have one, regardless of whether they’re fishing with a charter or on their own.
