Fishing in Mobile Bay

Does your dream angling adventure involve hooking plenty of tasty table fare? Then embarking on a Mobile Bay fishing trip is a must! This shallow inlet is protected from the Gulf of Mexico by a chain of barrier islands, and its marshy, reef-filled waters are bustling with world-famous fish.

One thing’s for certain – you’ll want to bring along a cooler when casting a line here! Mobile Bay is home to that unbeatable inshore trio of Redfish, Speckled Trout, and Flounder. These fish are fun to catch and even better to eat. Using light tackle to hook these species is a popular technique throughout Alabama, and will also see you reeling in Mackerel and Tripletail.

It’s not the only way to cast a line, though. The bay is also home to bottom fishing favorites – Snapper and Grouper species. You’ll find them lurking around the reefs just a few miles from the bay’s shore. See what we mean about tasty table fare?

Mobile Bay’s fishery has long been a popular hotspot for families, newbies, and experienced anglers alike, and this is reflected in the trips on offer here. A half day excursion is the perfect introduction to these waters, and will generally see you returning to land with a full cooler. Full day adventures give you the chance to cover more ground, hit both the reefs and marshes, and stock the cooler with even more fish!

There are a variety of departure points dotted all around Mobile Bay, and you’ll find charter boats launching out of every one. The majority of captains, however, are docked along the barrier islands, with Dauphin Island, Fort Morgan, and Gulf Shores being especially popular. On the mainland? Head to Fairhope, Daphne, or Mobile.

Rules & Regulations

Mobile Bay Fishing Seasons

January

Start your year off in the right way and sight fish the bay’s shallow waters around Mobile and the barrier islands. You’ll find plenty of Redfish and Spotted Seatrout on offer as they bask in the cooler waters!

February

The waters remain cool, which means an increase of Redfish and Spotted Seatrout in the bays and shallows. Flounder start to show up, too.

March
This is the month to visit if you want to hook Sheepshead, as well as trophy-sized Redfish! Flounder and Speckled Trout can be found in abundance in the flats and shallows.

April

April is all about Redfish and Speckled Trout, from “keeper”-sized table fare to seriously huge trophy fish! Sheepshead fishing remains excellent, and the first Tripletail start to make an appearance.

May

May is when things start to really heat up – both on land and in the water! You’ll find Speckled Trout, huge Redfish, and tasty Flounder on offer in the shallows. Slightly further out, the first Mackerel appear.

June

The weather continues to heat up, and so does the fishing – June often marks the start of Red Snapper season! Other Snapper and Grouper species can be found by the reefs, and inshore fishing stays strong.

July

If you’re lucky, this is when you might experience the famous “jubilee”! Even without this phenomenon, July fishing in the bay is magical, with Mackerel, Specks, Redfish, Flounder, Grouper, and Snapper all on offer.

August

If you can handle the scorching temperatures, August is the perfect time to hook Speckled Trout, Tripletail, and tasty Mackerel species. School’s out, so the waters are usually bustling with families and budding anglers!

September
Flounder are available year round in Mobile Bay, but fall is when they start to really shine, with huge fish being found in the shallows. Why not talk to your captain about Flounder gigging and try something different?

October

The weather is starting to cool off by now, but the bay’s fishing is still hot! Flounder fishing in the shallows remains excellent, Bull Redfish can be found cruising the marshes around Mobile, and reef fishing is plentiful.

November

November sees a resurgence of angling opportunities, with Speckled Trout, Redfish, Flounder, and Sheepshead all showing up in droves, thanks to the cooler temperatures!

December

Treat yourself to the best Christmas present possible, and explore Mobile Bay in the winter! The waters are cooler and much quieter when it comes to your fellow anglers – however, there’s still plenty of fish on offer.
