Fishing in Mosquito Lagoon

When it comes to inshore fishing in Florida, Mosquito Lagoon has earned itself a place at the very top of the list – and for good reason. Along with the Indian and Banana Rivers, it’s the third piece of the Indian River Lagoon System puzzle. This shallow waterway is packed full of palm trees, salt marshes, mangroves, and plenty of world-famous fish. Hop aboard one of the many Mosquito Lagoon fishing charters on offer, and get ready to explore this incredible fishery!

The lagoon offers an amazing array of fishing grounds, and with that comes an amazing array of fish. It’s known as the “Redfish Capital of the World,” thanks to the huge number of this species that inhabit its waters. Other inshore favorites, such as Tarpon, Speckled Trout, and Snook, accompany them. Even better? This fishery is active year-round, so you’ll be able to cast a line no matter when you visit.

Mosquito Lagoon’s charter captains offer a whole host of adventures. Newer anglers can test their skills on a four-hour adventure, and the calm waters here are a great opportunity for families to introduce little ones to fishing. More experience under your belt? Opt for a longer eight-hour trip, and test out your sight fishing skills as your captain poles you across these waters.

There are charter boats dotted along the entire length of the Mosquito Lagoon, but the most popular departure points are around New Smyrna Beach and the Intracoastal Waterway. The Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge, which encompasses most of the lagoon, is also a popular fishing spot. Just make sure you grab and sign a permit first!

Mosquito Lagoon Fishing Seasons

January

Snook fishing is forbidden in January, so you'll have to wait a while to battle the "Silver King." Gator Trout are frantically eating up all live bait, as the bait fish are few and far between, so this is the time to get that trophy!

February

Redfish are increasing as big schools move in, with over 100 fish per school! Grab some shrimp to maximize your chances of landing one.

March

As the weather warms, bait fish are starting to appear in greater numbers. Black Drum are starting to peak during this month, too.

April

April means one thing: amazing fishing all around. Speckled Trout are numerous and very hungry so they just boil the water! Snook are starting to move into deeper waters, near jetties and other man-made structure.

May

Speckled Trout fishing remains red hot., as does Redfish fishing. Tarpon reach their peak in May and you can catch many smaller specimens.

June

Snook fishing is forbidden in June, but you can still battle Tarpon and plenty of huge bull Reds during this month!

July

In July, juvenile Tarpon are present in the lagoon in large numbers, and you can have a field day fly fishing for them. Redfish can be hooked, too.

August

Redfish and Speckled Trout are coming into full swing, with larger specimens taking the bite regularly. Come hook that trophy Red, or introduce your kids to the fun of fishing for Speckled Trout!

September

Snook season reopens, and these fish are hungry, making them a great target. Tarpon are starting to migrate towards their winter shelters, but can still be found. Bull Redfish are in a feeding frenzy!

October

Cold weather sees Snook moving to their winter hideouts, so cast your line around the lagoon's deeper waters. Redfish and Trout fishing is as bountiful as ever.

November

Gator Trout are feeding up on bait fish in Mosquito Lagoon in November. Casting a line with live bait can bag you a proper keeper!

December

During December, Redfish and Snook school up, and sight-casting with live bait can produce excellent catches. Round up your year with a real trophy-sized specimen!
