Fishing in New River

With so many different fish species to choose from, it’s no wonder that the New River in North Carolina has become a top destination for many anglers. New River Fishing guides offer trips where you can target a mix of freshwater and saltwater species without having to venture too far.

Depending on the location, you can target everything from Bluegill and Bass to Cobia and Kingfish. The upper portions of the river contain steady populations of freshwater species, such as Sunfish, Crappie, Largemouth Bass, and Catfish.

Down past Jacksonville, the river widens into the Stones Bay and eventually empties out into the Atlantic Ocean. This area holds large numbers of Cobia, Kingfish, Spanish Mackerel, and Drum. Due to its proximity to the ocean, guides can take you deep sea fishing for Mahi Mahi, Tuna, Snapper, and Wahoo as well.

New River fishing guides offer half day, full day, and extended day trips, depending on how long you’d like to fish and how far you’d like to travel. Half day trips typically last four to five hours while full days will have you fishing for up to eight hours. Extended day trips will see you fishing far offshore, past the Gulf Stream, to chase big pelagic species, usually lasting anywhere from 10–12 hours.

There are several locations in Onslow County that offer excellent guide services for all skill levels. Some of these towns include Sneads Ferry and Topsail Beach. Since many of these guides are located right on the Atlantic Coast, you’ll have easy access to offshore waters as well as the bay and river. No matter where you go, a productive fishing trip is right around the corner!

Rules & Regulations

If you’re heading out on a saltwater charter, your fishing license will be covered for you. If you’re traveling with a freshwater guide, you’ll have to purchase a license separately before your trip. If you’re fishing alone and you’re over the age of 16, you’ll have to purchase a license regardless of whether you’re fishing in freshwater or saltwater.

New River Fishing Seasons

January

January is a great time to go fishing in North Carolina because there are fewer people on the water. You can expect to target Bluefish, Black Drum, Redfish, and Spotted Seatrout.

February

You can expect lots of the same results in February. Inshore, you’ll find solid numbers of Red and Black Drum, Bluefish, and Spotted Seatrout. Offshore, you can target Tuna and Amberjack.

March

Springtime is great for going offshore and catching Yellowfin Tuna. Hop on a saltwater charter that will take you to the Tuna grounds and enjoy a productive day of big game fishing!

April

Mahi Mahi make their debut in the offshore waters off the coast of Topsail Beach. You can also target Wahoo, Kingfish, and various Tuna species.

May

You can catch Cobia, Barracuda, and Bluefish anywhere from the coast to the bay. Spotted Seatrout, Spanish Mackerel, and Red and Black Drum are also some of the likely catches this time of the year.

June

The summer debut features lots of exciting opportunities for both inshore and offshore fishing charters. Hit the Gulf Stream and chase Mahi Mahi or stay close to shore to target Redfish and Black Drum.

July

Summer is in full swing and so is the fishing. Offshore, you’ll find Mahi Mahi, Amberjack, and Wahoo while inshore you’ll come across large numbers of Drum and Mackerel. Freshwater fishing for Redear and Bluegill will reap lots of awards.

August

August is a great time to head up the New River and target various freshwater species. Some of your targets include Largemouth Bass, Bluegill, and Redear.

September

If you’re in the mood for Flounder, now is the time to target this delicious fish. Fill up the bucket and have your catch cleaned and filleted for a delicious supper on the beach.

October

Seatrout, Flounder, Redfish, and Black Drum make up a large portion of the catches this time of year. The Tuna fall run kicks back into high gear as well, so if you’ve got a case of Tuna Fever, go offshore for some deep sea action!

November

The Tuna run continues well into November. Pick a charter that will take you deep dropping offshore and get that Tuna selfie!

December

December calls for great sight casting action in shallow waters. The main targets inshore are Redfish, Black Drum, and Spotted Seatrout. Offshore, you can hit the Gulf Stream to go after large Yellowfin Tuna.
