Fishing in Salmon River

The Salmon River is proof that size doesn’t matter. Its small and productive fishery in upstate New York is one of the most important destinations for sportfishers across the country. Head out on a Salmon River, NY fishing trip and you’ll be talking about the fish you caught for years to come!

You guessed it – this fishery is a mecca for Salmon. Expect to hook into Chinook and Coho Salmon in grear numbers. And it’s not just about Salmon, either. Productive stretches of the river are also brimming with Washington and Skamania Steelhead, as well as Brown Trout and Largemouth and Smallmouth Bass.

If you’re fishing the Salmon River during the fall Salmon run, don’t skip out on a full day trip. Fishing here is a bucket list item for many anglers and you’ll want to take full advantage of your surroundings. Haven’t got much time to spare? That’s ok too! You can get a taste of the action in as little as half a day.

The Salmon River stretches over 44 miles, but only 12 are considered prime Salmon and Trout fishing spots. As such, the most popular launch point for fishing charters is the town of Pulaski. Just below Pulaski you’ll also find the Douglaston Salmon Run, a private two and a half mile stretch of the river with excellent fishing.

Rules & Regulations

The Salmon River is subject to many regulations, because of this, it’s best to head out with a reputable guide. Remember to purchase a New York fishing license for all anglers over the age of 16. If you plan on fishing the private Douglaston Salmon Run, you’ll need to purchase an additional special pass.

Salmon River Fishing Seasons

January

If you're willing to brave the cold, you'll be rewarded with Steelhead. These fish aren't easy to hook so fish slow and be patient – that powerful strike is worth it when it comes.

February

It's still very cold and things are pretty quiet on the river. Keep practicing on those Steelhead head in preparation for next month, which is peak season!

March

Bundle up and get ready to get in on serious Steelhead action. You'll find a mix of new fish brought in my warming waters and fish that have been here since the fall hiding in deeper pockets.

April

Brown Trout are very tasty, so it should come as no surprise that they'll be your primary target at the start of spring. Keep smaller specimens and release the big fish (they don't taste as good).

May

Most anglers will turn their attention to Lake Ontario. It's the start of Salmon season and you'll find them congreating in the nearshore waters. Count on Bass and Trout, too.

June

The Salmon still aren't heading back into the river to spawn, so it's likely you'll be chasing the pink-fleshed fish in Lake Ontario. It's one of your last opportunities to hook into them nearshore.

July

Take advantage of the Brown Trout run early in the month. The fish will be quite large, as they prepare to spawn in the fall.

August

The Chinook and Coho Salmon are starting to make their way back from Lake Ontario's offshore waters. They're likely not entering the Salmon River yet, but they are very close.

September

It's game time. Early Chinook Salmon enter the river to spawn. You'll also find their silvery Coho cousins alongside. The fish are big and aggressive so gear up with your heavy tackle.

October

It's peak Salmon fishing season! Get in on the action before it ends next month. Expect to limit out on Chinook and Coho Salmon. It's a good idea to try and get here early, as the river is at it's busiest.

November

Catch the last on any lingering Salmon before retiring your heavy tackle until next year. Don't be sad, though, there's still the winter Steelhead run to look forward to.

December

End of the year with some Steelhead fishing. Make sure to check the weather conditions before you head out, though. There's likely be ice and slush floating in the river, making fishing difficult.
