Fishing in San Joaquin River

If you’re planning on fishing the San Joaquin River, you’re in for a real treat. This freestone river is home to a wide variety of species and a place where anglers from all over the state come to test their skills. This place is full of surprises, so grab the old rod and reel, invite your favorite fishing buddies, and get ready for a fun adventure!

Areas such as Montezuma Slough and Sherman Lake are just some of the many places where you can hook big Stripers, Largemouth Bass, and White Sturgeon. Other top-targeted species include American Shad, Rainbow Trout, Sacramento Sucker, Common Carp, Crappie, Catfish, and Sunfish. Another fish to keep your eye out for is King Salmon, which have made a serious comeback since 2019.

The San Joaquin River is located just about an hour’s drive from San Francisco, making it perfect for a day trip. Most San Joaquin fishing guides offer both half-day and full-day trips. Shorter trips are perfect if you’ve got kids or are on a tight schedule. However, if you’ve got time for a full day, you should definitely take advantage of a longer trip as you’ll be able to target more species and cover more fishing grounds.

Along the river, you’ll find fishing towns with some amazing spots that will have your rod bending in no time. From Pittsburg to Bethel Island, and even further inland towards Stockton, you’ll come across plenty of guides that will take you to productive areas where the fish are sure to bite.

Rules & Regulations

Anyone 16 or older must purchase a CA fishing license before heading out. Certain protected areas may be closed throughout parts of the year and some species are subject to seasonality. If you aren’t sure about the laws and regulations in your area, you can always ask a local guide or license agent.

San Joaquin River Fishing Seasons

January

January is a great month to target White Sturgeon, so whip out the heavy tackle and catch yourself a prehistoric monster!

February

White Sturgeon remain the top catch in February, so be sure to check out a guide that will take you bottom fishing or drifting.

March

As the waters start to warm up, Striped Bass start to make their way out of hibernation. Other fish settle into their spring patterns, including Largemouth Bass and Rainbow Trout.

April

Once April rolls around, you can expect great action from the Delta all the way to Stockton. Top catches this month include Stripers, Largemouth Bass, Sturgeon, and Crappie.

May

As May flowers begin to bloom, the fishing really starts to heat up. You can catch multiple fish in one day – Sturgeon, Striped and Largemouth Bass, Shad, and Catfish are some of your likely targets this month.

June

Striped Bass fishing is in full swing, so grab a guide that will take you trolling along the river and get ready to pull up a big Striper!

July

It’s the peak of summer and everything is biting! Sturgeon, Chinook, Striped Bass, Crappie, and Catfish take the reins throughout the rest of summer and fall.

August

Striper and Salmon fishing are hot throughout many areas of the river. Check out Montezuma and Broad Slough for some great Sturgeon action as well!

September

King Salmon claims the throne once again. September conditions are excellent for Chinook, as well as many other species, including Rainbow Trout, Crappie, and Largemouth Bass.

October

Trout and Salmon fishing are at their peaks in October and Striped Bass fishing is solid as well. Whether you’re a fly fisherman or conventional angler, October can reap lots of great catches for everyone!

November

Salmon fishing begins to slow down but Sturgeon really start to take the bait. Rainbow Trout are hungrier than ever as well, so pick a guide that will take you fly fishing for Trout or bottom fishing for Sturgeon.

December

Celebrate the holidays this year with a fun fishing trip with the family. With just an hour’s car ride from San Francisco, you’ll be fishing the productive San Joaquin River and creating lasting memories!
