Fishing in Toccoa River

Northern Georgia is home to some of the finest Trout fisheries in the world, so it’s no surprise that the 93-mile Toccoa River features on the agenda of so many anglers. In the upper river you’ll be catching and releasing some monster creatures that have been allowed to grow to incredible sizes. Hit the lower part, out of Ellijay, and you’ll fish deep waters accessible only by boat.

Fishing the Toccoa River is a joy to behold, with Rainbow, Brook, and Brown Trout biting at the end of your line for a fun-filled fishing experience. If you’re looking for some diversity, then combine your Toccoa River fishing trip with a visit to Lake Blue Ridge, and go after a range of Bass, Walleye, Perch, Catfish, and many more! Try wading, drift fishing, or even fly fishing, and there’s no end to what you can catch.

Hop aboard a charter and spend anywhere from four to eight hours on the water. Experienced anglers can even enjoy the river for an extended period, with the chance to go lodging in Ellijay too. Spend days on end getting acquainted with the fish, and get your fill of fishing.

Whether you’re a beginner or a pro, your professional fishing guide will make sure you have a memorable day out. Come and discover this tranquil corner of paradise and get your fish on!

Rules & Regulations

All anglers over the age of 16 on the Toccoa River must be in possession of a valid Georgian fishing license. If you’re looking to go after the state’s famous Trout population, then you’ll need an additional Trout permit. Buy them both at the same time and don’t forget to bring them along.

Your professional guide will make sure that you keep up with the latest fishing regulations, so get in touch before you come aboard to find out whether you’ll need to release your fish or not.

Toccoa River Fishing Seasons

January
There’s no need to worry about the winter blues in northern Georgia, with the mild weather offering plenty of opportunities for you to get out on the water. Hit up the lakes for the best results and get your fish on.
February
The Trout are yet to show up in February, so the river is sparse of anglers. Your best bet of some fishing action is still in the lakes, so hop on a charter or fish from shore to attract the bite of Bass and more.
March
As spring kicks in, the Trout population starts showing up. Get ready for a rush at the end of the month, as you spend plenty of hours going after Brook, Rainbow, and even Brook Trout in the upper and lower river.
April
There’s a reason that Blue Ridge’s annual Troutfest takes place in April. Join the fishing action to land plenty of these beauties, and stock up on gear for the new season, as you get swept up in the hype.
May
Spring is one of the best times to get out on the water in northern Georgia with Trout in abundance and Walleye providing plenty of action in the lakes. Target ‘em all and head home with some tasty treats.
June
Blue Ridge comes alive as the weather starts heating up. Join the revelers at the town’s annual Wine and Jazz Festival after a thrilling day exploring the productive waters of the Toccoa River and its tributaries.
July
The height of summer attracts anglers from all over to the rich waters of northern Georgia, and for good reason too. Make the most of your vacation and be at one with nature in the stunning forests along the river.
August
Make the most of summer break and bring the kids to the river in search of a healthy outdoor hobby. Go after Trout in the river, or the usual suspects in the lakes, and get your fill of exciting fishing.
September
There’s no sign of the fishing slowing down come September. In fact, the Trout fishing has never been better. Go after the holy grail of all three native Trout species and head home with a record to your name.
October
It’s the time of year that the whole of Ellijay has been waiting for. Georgia’s annual Apple Festival grips the town, so why not combine it with a fishing trip to the lower Toccoa and land plenty of fish, too?
November
As the Trout move away for the winter, you’ll have to rush to catch their bite. Don’t worry, though, as there are plenty of Walleye in Lake Blue Ridge to keep you on your toes, so get out on it.
December
All attention shifts to the lakes, as the colder weather sees the fish hide away from the river. Get your fish on as you try a range of techniques, and target Bass, Perch, Walleye, and more for a festive feast.

Do yourself a favor if you havenโ€™t fished Carters Lake and hire a guide. I caught two strippers each over 36 inches plus a half dozen spotted bass on a four hour trip with Captain Len Slay on Carters Lake in October 2023

Great. This year (2022) was a little on the hot (above average) side and there is always the chance of thunderstorms when that hot!

Worth every penny to have an experienced guide. The float trip was so much nicer than just a wade trip.

I would start with a guided outing to learn where the fish are and what the fish a biting. When you see it with your own eyes, it is different than reading about it on the internet.

A couple of weeks ago, three friends and I had a reunion of sorts after not having all been together at the same time for almost twenty years. Capt. Hunter Hoek was the perfect host and worked hard to see that we caught fish and had a great time, which we did. I plan to take my grandsons on his boat in the near future. We were very impressed with Hunterโ€™s knowledge and experience. Terry

We pushed off and Joe quickly put us on fish. My son and I both enjoyed catching trout that were very nice sized and a lot of fun to bring in. Joe shared many tips that will help us hone our trout fishing skills. With high water, we had the river to ourselves. All in all, a fantastic 4 hours. Highly recommend.

This was my first experience with North Georgia Trout Fishing Guide Service and I can absolutely say it will not be my last. Our guide, Corbin was as professional and knowledgeable as they come. He worked hard the whole trip to ensure we had a great time and catch fish. He hit the mark doing both. This truly a top notch guide service.
