Fishing in Manitoba

Situated in the very heart of Canada, the Keystone Province is an angling treasure trove. Across its territory, there are over 100,000 lakes brimming with fish. And to discover it, all you need to do is pair up with one of the numerous Manitoba Fishing Guides, and the adventure can begin!

Walleye are arguably the most popular species in these waters. They're widespread across Manitoba, serving as a delicious prize for any angler fishing here. Besides them, there are also huge Northern Pike, trophy Channel Catfish, Trout, Sauger, Sturgeon, and many other freshwater fish swimming throughout the province.

Angling is a year-round endeavor in Manitoba. The open water season lasts from mid-March through November, giving you plenty of time to tackle the local fishing grounds. In December, the waters start freezing, eventually forming a thick layer of ice you can fish through.

Aside from being a local favorite winter activity, ice fishing in Manitoba is also incredibly productive. You can catch most of the province's species fishing this way, but anglers usually yearn for big, Greenback Walleye the most.

Some lakes in Manitoba are accessible by car, making them suitable for day trips. But the more remote fisheries will require you to fly in. If you're considering that, it's usually best to find a lake lodge to host you and have them help you figure out the best way to get there. Popular fishing lakes include Lake Winnipeg, Falcon Lake, Parkland Region Lakes, Kississing Lake, and more.

Rules & Regulations

In Manitoba, anglers aged 16 and older are required to purchase a fishing license to legally cast their rod. As you plan your trip, it's also a good idea to get familiar with fish seasons, size, and bag limits, so you know what you can expect to target.

Manitoba Fishing Seasons

January

This is the best month to go ice fishing. There’s an abundance of lakes to choose from, and the ice is usually very thick in the middle of winter. Walleye, Trout, Northern Pike, and Whitefish are all in the cards.

February

Spend a weekend on Lake Winnipeg and book a couple of ice fishing expeditions while you’re there. This is your chance to catch a big Greenback Walleye and bring it home for dinner.

March

March is the period “in-between,” when ice fishing is slowing down, but it’s not warm enough for regular fishing. Still, ice will stay thick in the Northern Region, so why not go and explore?

April

If you're in the north, have one last hurrah on the ice before getting ready for the open water season. The ice still holds on certain lakes, so you can seek them out and target Walleye, Trout, and Pike.

May

The open water season is officially open! Whatever you’d like to hook, now's the time. Choose your lake and, depending on where you are, catch anything from Pike and Bass to Catfish and Perch.

June

It’s nice and warm in June, and the bite is hot! Visit one of Manitoba's provincial parks and the lakes in them to chase Rainbow, Brook, Tiger, and Brown Trout. Pike and Walleye will be biting as well.

July

July is one of the best months for fly fishing, especially if you go to the Parkland Region. Here, you’ll find a lot of pristine streams and lakes surrounded by woods and mountains, perfect for some top-notch Trout fishing.

August

It’s hard to pick just one place in Manitoba, so why not explore a whole area? The Interlake Region boasts outstanding fisheries like Lakes Manitoba, Winnipegosis, and Winnipeg, all known for their variety and productivity.

September

The beginning of fall is a good time to explore the Central Region with its beautiful, productive rivers. In most places, you can expect Perch, Crappie, Bass, Carp, and Walleye at the end of your line.

October

It’s getting colder outside, which means you better dress up well before you hop aboard for a day of fishing. Your prey might be bite-shy at this time of year, but Walleye and Pike are still as hungry as ever.

November

Take a deep breath as the temperatures drop and reel in a few more fish before the ice starts to settle in. Very soon, the time will come to drill the first holes in the new ice and drop your line for your own trophy Walleye.

December

Spend several hours on the ice and fill your cooler with delicious fish like Greenback Walleye and Perch. There’s nothing like a hearty dinner to warm you up after an exciting but cold day outside.
