To freshwater anglers and fly fishermen, Maryland offers over a hundred streams, rivers, and reservoirs to explore. Gunpowder Falls and the Savage River feature world-class Trout fishing. The famous Potomac River is abundant with Bass, Catfish, Snakehead, and other stillwater favorites.
However, most anglers visit Maryland to fish the Chesapeake Bay. The bay is famous for its exhilarating Striped Bass fishery, but it’ll also give you a chance to fish for many other species. Some of these include Redfish, Bluefish, Flounder, and Croaker.
The Free State also features fantastic nearshore and offshore fishing. Most of it takes place out of Ocean City, situated on the Atlantic coast. Nearshore, you’ll catch Seabass, Tautog, and other reef species. Offshore, in the Gulf Stream, you’ll see the likes of Mahi Mahi, Tuna, and Marlin biting the end of your line.
While it’s possible to fish year-round, most charter captains in Maryland operate between April and mid-December. If you’re fishing the bay or close to shore in the ocean, half day trips will give you plenty of action. Gulf Stream trips require more time, as you’ll have to go at least 55 miles offshore.
Rules & Regulations
Saltwater charter captains will cover your license if you’re fishing aboard their boat. Solo anglers 16 and up will need to buy a permit, whether you’re fishing freshwater or saltwater. If you’re keen on catching some Trout, you’ll need to get a Trout stamp with your fishing license.

Captain Vince knows where to find fish and how to catch them. Within 4 hours of our trip, we caught 30+ fish including sheepshead, tatugo, black drum, puffer fish, etc. The entire trip was filled with laughters, fun stories and special edition ginger ales. Our deck hand Veronica was also very sweet and helpful. We had my sonโs best friend with us, and I have never seen him this happy. Captain Vince and Veronica created our life time memory in a beautiful November Sunday afternoon.

Scotty, the captain, knew where to go to find fish. We caught five keeper rock fish the first hour. Then we did some catch and release fun fishing for a while. First mate was right on top of things and releasing the smaller fish. We had an absolute great time. I highly recommend ROCK ON FISHING for your fishing adventures. ๐๐

Capt. Ken made this trip! We went on a mother-son fishing trip and we had a blast. We caught stripers and large mouth bass. He taught us how to use the lures to our advantage. His boat is awesome. Great trip. Great price. Great fun!!

This was a Great Trip. The Captain went above and beyond taking care of us.
He worked extremely hard to put us on fish for the day.
He knew the area extremely well and where to target during the day.

Captain Dave took us on an amazing outing! He wowed us with his knowledge of local waterways, made each of the three kids on board feel special, and went the extra mile (quite literally) to find us as many rockfish as he could. We couldn't have had a better experience.

Captain Vince knows where to find fish and how to catch them. Within 4 hours of our trip, we caught 30+ fish including sheepshead, tatugo, black drum, puffer fish, etc. The entire trip was filled with laughters, fun stories and special edition ginger ales. Our deck hand Veronica was also very sweet and helpful. We had my sonโs best friend with us, and I have never seen him this happy. Captain Vince and Veronica created our life time memory in a beautiful November Sunday afternoon.

Had a great half day on the water and caught our limit. Capt changed things up based on feedback from others when the bite slowed and had us back catching. Good that he had a network of other captains willing to share info to help everyone catch fish. Overall great experience

Went in beginning of November, AM. The crew put us on fish right away. In fact, caught our limit within 15/20 minutes. It was crazy! Never been on a trip like this one. Nothing but great things to say. Definitely will do again.

Captain Richard was fantastic! He was communicative about possible weather challenges for our original date, and rescheduled us for a perfect Saturday afternoon trip in Eastern Bay. Captain was friendly, resourceful, and did everything in his power to help us have a great day and keep bringing in fish - including staying out past our original booking time. Would definitely recommend and will book with Captain Richard again.

Scotty, the captain, knew where to go to find fish. We caught five keeper rock fish the first hour. Then we did some catch and release fun fishing for a while. First mate was right on top of things and releasing the smaller fish. We had an absolute great time. I highly recommend ROCK ON FISHING for your fishing adventures. ๐๐
