FAQs about Fishing Charters in Oregon

The average price for a private 4 hour Oregon fishing trip is $441, while an 8 hour private trip will cost you $682 based on prices on FishingBooker.com.

According to customer reviews, Oregon Fly Guide, Premier Guide Service - Boardman, and All Depth Charters are some of the most popular fishing charters in Oregon. Full list of top fishing charters in Oregon.

Oregon Fly Guide, Premier Guide Service - Boardman, and All Depth Charters all received great reviews from families who booked fishing trips in Oregon.

The most popular fish species you can target are Chinook Salmon, Coho Salmon, and Rainbow Trout (Steelhead). Top fishing techniques include trolling, light tackle, and spinning. River fishing, nearshore fishing, and inshore fishing are commonly offered by local guides.

With lakes, rivers, and an extensive coastline to explore, casting a line in the “Beaver State” is all about variety! Hop aboard one of the many Oregon fishing charters on offer and you’ll have the chance to experience it all for yourself.

The species you’ll target depend on where you fish, but no matter where you go, you’ll find world-famous fish. The Oregon Coast boasts Chinook and Coho Salmon, Lingcod, Rockfish, Halibut, Crabs, Clams, and even Sturgeon in the bays during cooler months. In the summer, you can go deep sea fishing for Tuna offshore. Trolling is the most popular technique, and captains run trips that last anywhere from a half day to a full day Tuna-chasing affair.

Freshwater fishing here is seriously exciting, too. Oregon boasts the Columbia River, as well as the Willamette, Clackamas, Nestucca, and Umpqua Rivers. In summer, the Columbia is bustling with Sturgeon and Chinook Salmon. Spring sees smaller rivers fill up with Salmon and Steelhead. The Deschutes River is a Trout hotspot. Tenmile Lake boasts Rainbow Trout, Catfish, and Panfish. Light tackle is a favored technique, and trips run from half days to full days.

With such a variety of fishing grounds on offer, there are plenty of departure points to choose from. Tillamook, Coos Bay, and Astoria are hot spots for ocean fishing. Heading to the Columbia River? Charter captains depart from Astoria, Portland, and around the Bonneville Dam. For smaller rivers, you’ll find local guides posted up along the river banks. Basically, wherever you want to fish, you’ll find someone waiting to take you out!

Rules & Regulations

All anglers age 12 and older must buy a fishing license to cast a line in Oregon. If you plan on fishing for Salmon, Sturgeon, or Steelhead in the Columbia River or its tributaries, you must also purchase a Columbia River Basin Endorsement.

January

In the rivers, winter fishing is all about Steelhead and Sturgeon. During January you can have great luck fishing for both species, but just be sure to check out which fish you can keep ahead of time.

February

Most Sturgeon in the Columbia River stick around Portland and Longview early in the year. Meanwhile, small streams are swarming with winter Steelhead. In bayside towns, crabbing and clamming can be excellent.

March

Oregon fishing starts to pick up momentum in March, when spring Chinook make their entrance in the rivers. Jetty fishing produces the likes of Herring, Surfperch, and Lingcod.

April

Come spring, Shad fishing in the Columbia River is extremely popular, with several million fish passing through this waterway! Winter Steelhead and spring Chinook fishing is hot, too.

May

The season for Halibut typically opens in May, making this a great time to dabble in a little bottom fishing! Trophy Sturgeon fishing in the Columbia River also kicks off, while the best of Salmon season is just ahead.

June

It’s "June Hog" season in the Columbia River, when anglers catch some of the biggest Chinook of the year. Summer Steelhead are on the scene, while more and more “Dinosaur” Sturgeon are spotted by the day.

July

Albacore Tuna fishing is usually in full swing by July, drawing many anglers to the waters offshore. This is also one of the best times to experience Oregon's deep sea fishing, when every species is biting.

August

Many anglers head to Astoria to explore Buoy 10's fishery in August. If you’re looking to avoid the crowds, there’s still superb fishing to be had in the lakes, bays, and offshore.

September

It’s hard to pick a bad place for fishing in Oregon at this time of year. The Columbia River offers fall Chinook, Coho, and Steelhead, while the bays promise no shortage of surprises.

October

By October, many guides have moved to the Bonneville Dam for trophy Sturgeon fishing. Elsewhere, anglers in Portland are enjoying the fall Chinook season.

November

The season for Halibut may be closed at this time of year, but crabbing and clamming opportunities are heating up just in time to make up for it! River fishing guides are targeting winter Steelhead.

December

Walleye, Steelhead, and Sturgeon are all biting in December. So long as the rain holds off, you can have great success while crabbing in the bays!

Just make sure you know what you are booking if you are from the East Coast. The charters in the East head out a lot further than the West coast ones do, apparently. Besides that, have fun. It will be a great experience.

Fishing was good but again nature is in control and anyone that goes needs to be able to handle disappointment as well as over excitement about catching what they go for.

Track the weather. Best fishing for stealhead is after lots of rain that raises rivers to flood stage for several days. Be ready to fish when the water gets to a cloudy emerald green. The Kilchis will be ready first, Usually the second day after the rain backs off. The Wilson and Trask take longer, three days minimum.

Don't bring any of your own fishing gear. Dress for rain and cold - although it was 81 degrees on 10-17-18 when I went.

just do what the captain instructs you to do ie; if he tells you it's best to keep the rod in the pole holder then do it and don't hold the rod. thats why you loose fish. tip the captain well if you like him and he performs.

Make sure you are prepared if you get sea sick. Make sure you know what size boat would best fit the experience you are looking for and check multiple local sources if you aren't sure.

Full day near shore halibut and bottom fishing. Couldn’t go deep for halibut (only allowed Thurs - Sat). Still got a halibut and some nice fish - several different rock fish (including an 8.5 lb copper!) and a Lingcod. Highly recommend Captain Dave - he made sure we caught fish and had a great day.

Trip was first class. Captain Demar and his assistant Aaron were very professional, funny, easy directions and contact. We caught our limit of salmon and lots of crab and were back in port by 1pm. Boat was comfortable, equipment was very good, they worked well together and we all had fun. I would recommend this trip and would do it again if in the area. Great!

Captain Neil was just awesome with my two boys, my wife, and myself, I wish there was more than 5 stars to give. Everyone caught fish and was given personal attention throughout the fishing trip. We all caught fish which was filleted by the Captain and prepared for transport. If you are looking for a family personal fishing experience, this is exactly what you need.
