Yellowfin Tuna Fishing in Venice
(Thunnus albacares)
Yellowfin Tuna are one of the most famous and prestigious offshore predators – their reputation as great fighters as well as fantastic fish to eat is hard-won. In Venice, Tuna fishing is what the place revolves around - fishing for this great beast is a proud local tradition.
Why Come Here?
Venice is blessed with an excellent location when you want to target Yellowfin Tuna. This is one of the few places in the world that boasts year-round fishing for this species. However, the best fishing starts ‘round December and lasts throughout the winter until March. Tuna are all over the area, sometimes they can be caught as close as 5 miles off the shore, though usually you can expect a one-hour boat ride to the fishing grounds.
Natural phenomena don’t end with the year-round fishing you have here. This area has another trick up its sleeve – the “Midnight Lump”. Unofficially, “the worst-kept secret in Louisiana”, this is a natural plateau found roughly 50 miles southwest of Venice. These waters, also known as the “Sackett Bank,” are around 200-250 feet deep, with the surrounding area being at a depth of 400+ feet. Smaller fish get caught in the current on top of the plateau and big Yellowfin Tuna stalk the outskirts chomping up all smaller fish. Chumming the water will draw the big boys in, but don’t think it’s that easy. Newcomers are advised to hire a seasoned captain to guide them as the waters can get quite rough here. The “Lump” is usually fished December through March.
What To Know
Outside of the “secret” fishing spots, following shrimping boats usually brings the best results. As the boats discard all non-shrimp catch when they bring their nets in, predatory fish have learned to follow them. Once you spot a shrimping fleet, ready your chum buckets (you need quite a solid offering to draw the fish away) and start spraying. With a little luck, the Yellowfins won’t be able to resist and will dart your way.
The equipment you should bring with you must be very sturdy. You’ll fight big predatory fish, so fishing belts and high-test lines are recommended. Don’t forget to grab wire leaders and bring braided line, or you may lose your fish before the fight even begins. Yellowfins love live bait, so combining live bait with chum is a tried-and-true method.
