When it comes to Flounder fishing in the Lone Star state, there’s one place that you simply can’t avoid hearing all about: Galveston Bay. And for good reason, too: it’s part of this area’s vast bay system, and is home to some of the most fruitful and consistent fishing grounds around. With plenty of jetties and passes leading into the Gulf, as well as the Intracoastal Waterway, this is the location to hook Texas’s favorite Flatfish as it migrates. So whether you’re into Flounder fishing in Galveston Bay the traditional way, or want to hunt your catch on a gigging expedition, there’s a wealth of charters in this area that’ll give you something to really talk about!

How can I choose the perfect charter?

There are two things to consider when selecting your Flounder-fishing adventure in Galveston Bay: location and experience!

Location

Thanks to the bay’s vast size (it’s over 30 miles across!) and Flounder’s love for muddy coastal floors, you won’t have to travel far by boat until you reach the hotspots. Most charters are located right on the bay’s shoreline, and just minutes from the fishing action.

This inshore species can be found all over the bay, but Rollover Pass has long been known as a Flounder stronghold. This peculiar-looking Flatfish also loves “hugging” the various jetties around this area, with Texas City Dike being an especially favored spot. Stretching for 11 miles, the majority of charters will happily take you along its entire length!

Duration

No matter where you’re based, you’ll be able to find a trip that suits your level of fishing know-how, but something to consider is how much time you want to spend on the water. Flounder fishing in Galveston Bay is a perfect opportunity for hardcore anglers as well as newbies traveling with their families, and the charters on offer here reflect that!

If you’re just discovering your sea legs, many charters will happily take you out for a 4-hour adventure. If you have more experience, and want to return to shore with a full freezer, 8-hour trips are very common, and will allow you to visit a variety of different fishing spots.

Technique

In the past, fishing for Flounder species with a rod and line might have been scoffed at for being “boring,” but local fishermen will soon set you straight: Flounder are an “ambush” predator, which means you’ll have to use all your smarts to cleverly mimic the movements of their prey if you want to reel one in! That doesn’t mean this technique is just reserved for experts, though. Newbies are encouraged to try it out, and will receive plenty of advice and support from their captain.

For a truly authentic Galveston Bay fishing experience, gigging for Flounder is the way to go! This method has a lot more in common with hunting than fishing: You’ll “stalk” your target under the cover of night, before using a gig to spear it. Anglers of all ages and skill levels can partake in this exciting activity, too. It’s often billed as the perfect family adventure!

What should I bring?

As is the case all over Texas, charters in Galveston Bay generally do not include a fishing license. You can purchase one online or at a local bait and tackle shop. When it comes to fishing gear, you don’t have to worry: The vast majority of captains will make sure you’re decked out with everything you need for your trip, including gigging equipment. You’ve heard all about Galveston Bay’s incredible angling opportunities: Come and discover them for yourself!

Understand the time of year your are fishing and set your expectations appropriately. Communicate with the captain in advance of cooking to get fishing reports and ask the types of fish that are being caught and how many. We did these things and the trip turned out as expected.

I know you can never do anything about the weather but if you have a trip with wind forecasted be prepared you may not have a great experience and may not catch fish. But as I have always heard and I say, that is why they call it fishing and not catching.

Listen to Capt. Bubba, he knows his stuff! And, if you listen, you will catch a bunch! Very attentive and helping you with bait immediately to get your pole back in the water. We werenโ€™t professionals and it was nice to have help but not make you feel incompetent.

Galveston gets busy on the weekends. Allow for travel time to get to your pickup location. The weather and water conditions change daily so prepare for that clothing and time wise. Maybe allow for some flexibility in your schedule if time, conditions, and your captain allow for it. Stay in touch with your Captain pre trip.

The older captains have great wisdom, but the young bucks are working hard to prove themselves. Liam, a young buck was outstanding. He got us on the fish early and often.

Depending on the time of the year, you will catch the species of fish that are moving. We fished the jettyโ€™s and during the 2nd week of March you can expect to catch mostly Sheep head and Black drum. You cannot keep the bigger Black drum. Sheep head are great eating though.
