Marlin (Blue)

  • Size 200 to 400lbs
  • Food Value Good
  • Game Qualities Excellent
  • Habitats Offshore

Madeira is famous for its larger-than-average Blue Marlin, with most of those hooked in the area weighing between 500-700 lbs. Most years seen at least one 'grander' (fish weighing over 1000lbs) caught off Madeira, with the first grander to be caught in European waters supposedly caught here by Dr Antonio Ribeiro, a pioneer of Blue Marlin fishing on the island. Due to the island's steep drop off close to shore it is possible to catch Blue Marlin just 1 km away from the marina. The main fishing grounds are on the protected south coast of the island, with lure fishing the most common method used.

Although Blue Marlin fishing in Madeira underwent a severe downturn in the late 1990s due to the strong El Nino current of 1996-7 it has now recovered to its former glory. Nowadays the emphasis is on conservation and preservation of the species, with catch and release predominant.

What People Are Saying About Marlin (Blue) Fishing in Madeira

"Full Day Mixed Fishing"

Trent E Dickey fished with Gavito - Big Game Fishing on September 27, 2018

Great day with Graham! We started with some jigging and caught some nice fish inshore followed by most of the day trolling for marlin and tuna. No takers but we were in the area, good marks and saw another boat pick up probably a 700 lbs blue marlin maybe 30 meters off our bow...we'll get em next time. Highly recommend this trip, great time even if the cards dont fall perfectly.

"8 hour mixed fishingvtrip"

Richard Peace fished with Gavito - Big Game Fishing on May 29, 2018

The captain graham was fantastic although the bottom fishing was difficult due to choppy seas, and the tuna and marlin weren’t feeding, dissapointing day fish wise, but was a truly fantastic trip Graham certainly likes a bit of banter, and gives as good as he takes. Let him catch the first fish and he buys the beers at the end of the trip. Would recommend this skipper and his boat to anyone

"Half day morning with Solomon and Anabal"

Brooke Bode fished with Madeira Marlin - Balancal on July 16, 2017

Solomon, the first mate was great and experienced. He and Anabal had us hooked up with a blue marlin by 11:20. Trip started at 10:00. Approx 400lbs. Only a mile from shore. Wonderful flat seas and perfect weather. Would hire these guys again. Thanks guys.
