If you’re looking for one of the best Billfish spots in the Gulf of Mexico, then Marlin fishing in Destin, Florida is something to be witnessed. This is one of the best places to go after these majestic beasts because it’s much closer to the Gulf’s bluewater than other fishing hubs.
Marlin (Blue and White) visit these waters in the heat of the summer, but the best time to catch something formidable is in September and October. White Marlin are particularly active during the fall, while Blues love higher temperatures.
On a good day, you can have anywhere from a couple hookups to 10, if you know where to go and you’ve got an experienced captain at the helm. The bite can start 12 miles from the shore, at the famous "100-Fathom Curve", and it only gets better the further you go. Blue Marlin love the open deep waters (600+ feet), and this is where you can hook a big one.
To get the most out of the Marlin-oriented trip, opt-in for the ones that last eight hours or more. You might need to travel 20–40 nautical miles from shore to get to the most productive hotspots, so you want to have plenty of time for everything (including the ride to and from the fishing grounds). Charter companies often offer multi-day trips, that can take out up to 150 miles offshore and put you on the intense Billfish action that will challenge you in every way.
You'll mostly be trolling with live bait to get the attention of voracious Marlin, though there’s a variety of lures you can use as well. When one is hooked, you’ll know it straight away – their acrobatic jumps are all the announcement you’ll need. Getting these gigantic fish (especially Blue Marlin, that can weigh anywhere from 200–900+ pounds) to the boat is a workout like no other and it’s not for the weak-kneed.
Marlin fishing in Destin, Florida is deep sea fishing at its best and the sheer number of anglers pouring into Destin every day is proof enough. If catching Marlin is on your bucket list, then this is the place to be!

Be prepared for cooler weather on the water and at speed on the boatโฆ...layer your clothing. Sunglasses, hats a must! It sure beats sweltering in the summer heat though!!

Definitely would recommend Captain Chad for first time anglers of any age. He has the patience and knowledge needed for that first time angler to motivate them to keep fishing in the future.

I fish here every October and we always seem to catch fish. Be prepared for high seas and be sure to take Dramamine to keep your stomach settled.

For first timers, try a four-hour nearshore charter, but if you want to deep sea fish you will probably need a full day. We booked with Captain Jayson Self on the King of Kings boat, a 38-footer with covered area and a toilet. Captain Jayson & Juan were very helpful and fun to be with. Having a great captain, crew, and a boat with a covered area and toilet makes for a great trip. We caught 35+ fish which also makes for a great charter!

Try one of the party boats first round out. It's an inexpensive way to get a taste of the area and you have a ton of space to get out of the sun if needed.
