Redfish Fishing in Destin

Redfish
  • Size 3 to 12lbs
  • Food Value Good
  • Game Qualities Good
  • Habitats Inshore, Nearshore, Flats, Backcountry

(Sciaenops ocellatus)

Known around the world as “the world’s luckiest fishing village,” the angling opportunities for Redfish Destin has to offer definitely live up to this reputation! Destin provides access to a variety of fishing grounds that this fish thrives in, providing plenty of opportunity for anglers of all skill levels to hook this Floridian favorite. Come and find out just how lucky these waters are!

What to Expect

A visit to Choctawhatchee Bay, north of Destin, is a must for newbies and experienced anglers alike. If you’re a budding angler, charter captains suggest opting for a half day trip, which will give you plenty of time to explore the shallows around Destin’s shore, as well as heading out to the deeper waters around Mid-Bay Bridge, where huge Bull Reds lurk.

More experience under your belt? Plenty of captains here will take you to “Destin Pass,” where the bay meets the Gulf. These waters are usually pretty fast-moving and tumultuous, and are a great place to test your light tackle skills against huge Bulls!

If you’re willing to travel further east, you’ll have the opportunity to drop lines in the plentiful Hogtown Bayou as you make your way to the Choctawhatchee River. Both of these locations offer up more local-style fishing, with fly fishing and light tackle being the norm here. It’s the perfect area for Redfish enthusiasts to earn some serious bragging rights!

How to Prepare

Destin’s captains know better than most how important it is to make sure guests are “hooked up” with top-quality fishing gear, so you’ll be provided with everything you need for your day on the water. Just bring your favorite snacks and drinks, and get ready to try your luck against some huge Redfish in the world’s luckiest fishing village!

Donโ€™t forget that what you catch can be your dinner. Several restaurants near the harbor, such as Dewey Destinโ€™s, can prepare your fish any way you like with all the sides. DELICIOUS! I recommend bronzed or blackened. Thanks for the memories.

I Would have liked to wait one more week, so bull red snapper would have been in season. June 1st.

Great for spring bottom fishing. Just B cause fishing with captain ken was really great. If first time fishing itโ€™s a really great start specially for younger kids giving the the thrill but still being able to pull the fish in by themselves.

Fishing in Destin is great. If you get with a good outfit, you're guaranteed to catch fish. However, if you want to keep the fish you catch, you need to check the seasons for your targeted fish and plan accordingly. The seasons for many of Florida's game fish are pretty short. Booking a trip and catching a bunch of amazing fish you can't keep can be frustrating. But, all in all, great place to fish!

Great fishing. Just check to make sure Red Snapper or Grouper are in season if you want more meat to bring home.

May is great time because the weather is great and it is much less crowded than later in the year. Fishing Booker was big help in selecting a charter and scheduling the trip?

I am not an experienced salt water fisherman, in fact it had been 14 years since the last time. Being from Michigan my fishing is all fresh water. If you are in a similar position, I would recommend a 4 hour trip. That way you get a taste, and some education, and will know better what you want to do next.

Pack a bag with some snacks, have the appropriate clothing on so you can stay cool and not get burned. Also, wear a patch if you are prone to getting sea sick.

I would recommend a private fishing charter on the bay for first timers. Itโ€™s relaxed, more personable, and sure to be a great time

Some grouper and snapper were closed but still very fun to catch and release, same with the sharks. Fight quality fish till your arms fall off then hit a spot for some smaller but very tasty fish to fill the cooler

Water was a little rough and a little cold for some of the fish to be biting yet but we stayed busy catching (and releasing) small Trigger Fish and Vermillion Snapper.
